Photographer’s Note
Taken along the Palisadoes road, the connection between Kingston and Norman Manley International Airport. Actually a tombolo--a series of coral islands connected by accumulated sediments--rather than a spit or peninsula, the Palisadoes provides a vital, storm-absorbing barrier for Kingston. The tombolo also makes Kingston Harbour the seventh largest natural harbor in the world.
Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused massive changes to the Palisadoes and threatened the airport connection, a major lifeline for Jamaica. The photo shows the remains of decades-old groynes, almost destroyed by Ivan. Rocks like those in the foreground are now being excavated from the ocean floor to build up a new line of defence against hurricanes and sea level rise. Visible on the right is Plumb Point lighthouse, which sits on the shoreline half way along the Palisadoes across from the airport.

Hello
The power of sea is amazing and dangerous. Waves crashing about breakwaters and seaside rocks do sensation. Perfect picture under technical regard. Best regards

Bonjour Mary
un bon choix de cadrage avec cette photo découpées en 3 bandes horizontales. J'aime bien le mouvement apporté par la vague.

Hi Mary,
An interesting note to accompany this photo. Good depiction of the surroundings and elements. I have been by the harbour a few times and when tropical storms come in the waves can really be quite something - even for a harbour! Luckily I was never there during any hurricanes.. All the best, Casper

Bonjour Mary.
Cette photo en dit beaucoup sur la force des ouragans. Quand la nature se déchaîne l'homme semble une fourmi et les moyens qu'il emploie sont dérisoires. Bonne composition avec la vague qui se brise sur les rochers.

Hi, Mary,
I like the drama you have captured in this photo. Three elements call that out: (1) the damaged groynes; (2) the turbulent sea, punctuated by the crashing wave; and (3) the contrast in lighting between the bright foreground and the dark (almost foreboding) distance.
I also like the repeated horizontal bands in the composition.
Regards,
- William
