Photographer’s Note

Adding to the large body of market photos, this is a sidewalk vending area outside a supermarket in the mid-Kingston district of Cross Roads. This vendor is selling papaya, ackee, jackfruit, bananas, oranges, soursop, custard apples, otaheite apples, bananas, tomatoes, scallions and yams.

In Cross Roads vending is fairly orderly but intensive and often illegal street vending activity in some other parts of the city prompted the local government to institute a temporary ban and a clean-up program in 2008. However, because higgling provides critical income for many citizens and shoppers welcome any savings, it is likely to be around for a long time.
