Zinc roofed huts, tenderly built with wooden bunks, and certainly not the sort of housing built to stand hurricanes that have flattened the cay in the past.

There's no electricity, no gas to cook over, and water had to be brought from the main land many miles a way.

You could say the living on the fisherman's island was basic in the extreme, a hard way of life... so much so that Runcanny here was sent to the cays to learn to fish and stay out of trouble! After all there's not much he could do other than fish and sleep, sleep and fish.

At 15 he was the youngest kid living on the cays and this was his yard, which he shared with 3 others. Note the nice green weed hanging from the doorway - that's actually mint! LOL! And you see that Dutch pot there, well that's where that mint gets put every morning to make a nice cup of tea. And also where the fish gets cooked, at the end of the day, when the fishermen come back from sea.

Hi Cassian,

A good documentary shot. I like your personal note too. It would be interesting to see where the guy in the picture is now.

Benny

Hi Casper!
This one is an "oldies but goldies". Ok, not so old, but surely gold. Despite the scanig quality, the situation is well set and the portrayal of the native guy around his environ is very nice. Cheers,
Deniz

Hi Casper. I quite like the feeling created by scanning these photos, particularly the colours. Nice daily life shot. Better I think that the subject is not looking you straight in the eye. Look forward to seeing more. Hope you are well. Not a great bank holiday for taking shots unfortunately! Chris

Hi Cassian,
despite the slightly out of focus effect due to the scanning, this is an excellent documentary and human photograph from a not often seen place on TE, the colors are lovely and I like the modest attitude of that young man. Your note is great too and gives us insight into his life, I wonder what he is doing now...

TFS,
Greetings, Michèle

Hi Casper,
compliments for the photo but also for your trip to this remote place. Interesting note.
Cheers chris

Hello casper. I was not yet in Jamaica. But so similarly as in your photo I could imagine the country. The hut, the man, the things outside, - everything looks like poverty. The photo is outstanding, likewise the very informative and skillful text. Really impressing. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Casper,
A great depiction of way of life in a less fortunate country. The quality of the image with some noise and not as sharp give the reminiscent of old, classic really. Must be a scan image. All element is nicely place in the image, the inclusion of the boy which made this image worthwhile. This is photojournalist quality. Something we see in National Geographic. Excellent work that shows your sensitivity and compassion. My admiration to you since I started here.
