Photographer’s Note

Taken along the Palisadoes road, the connection between Kingston and Norman Manley International Airport. Actually a tombolo--a series of coral islands connected by accumulated sediments--rather than a spit or peninsula, the Palisadoes provides a vital, storm-absorbing barrier for Kingston. The tombolo also makes Kingston Harbour the seventh largest natural harbor in the world.

Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused massive changes to the Palisadoes and threatened the airport connection, a major lifeline for Jamaica. The photo shows the remains of decades-old groynes, almost destroyed by Ivan. Rocks like those in the foreground are now being excavated from the ocean floor to build up a new line of defence against hurricanes and sea level rise. Visible on the right is Plumb Point lighthouse, which sits on the shoreline half way along the Palisadoes across from the airport.
