Diver with a Crab - Underwater

Jamaica is an island nation of the Greater Antilles, 234 kilometres (146 mi) in length and as much as 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width situated in the Caribbean Sea.

I did not go to Jamaica with high expectations of great diving - but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The diving certainly wasn't the best I've ever done - but it was pretty good. We saw lots of nice coral, spotted eagle rays & tons of puffer fish.

There aren't many dive operations like on most Caribbean islands, but we were there with a friend who knew one of them, so we were treated well. We stayed in Negril (on the western tip of the island) & most of our dives were just a short boat ride away.

While we weren't diving there was always great food & music to be found, plus we were able to rent bikes to ride around & explore.

Though a small nation, Jamaica is rich in culture, and has a strong global presence. The musical genre of reggae originated in the island's vibrant popular urban recording industry. Internationally known reggae musician Bob Marley was born in Jamaica and is very respected there.
