Cockpit Country is a rugged, inaccessible area of inland Jamaica. These very characteristics have given it special importance and it is proposed that it become a World Heritage Site. It is an island-within-an-island of specially-adapted biodiversity found nowhere else in the world and is a last refuge for some species driven from the rest of Jamaica by humans. It was also a place where a population of Maroons was able to force the British into signing a peace treaty in 1738. In this website, we use the term Cockpit Country to refer to the anthropologically-defined area within the "ring road". This is the area where the karst terrain is so developed that humans have not found it viable to develop and where some semblance of the original flora and fauna remains.

Thisd picture is taken from Maroon Town looking over the last developped acres into the wilderness of cockpit country.

Hi Gerrit

Good sharpness & colour, with the fg branches adding texture & depth, as well as a frame. A superb blue sky, with lush tropical greenery. Tfs!

Hello Gerrit,
A beautiful lit shot of this tropical forest. I like the point of view looking through the gap in the trees and the blue/green tonal contrasts. Very good sharpness.

Gerrit,
it might be that this place is an inaccessible for you, but not for us after having you battling tyourself through the jungle and taking this overview POV of the place. Curious name for a place - cockpit. Why? What is the story behind?

Dag Gerrit,

You created a beautiful frame with green trees at both sides. Greens are very attractive and the mountains at background are very nice. I was curios about "cockpit" but already found the answer in your discussion with Dear "pboehringer".

Friendly Regards,

Ertugrul

Very nice. The light is wonderful, the sharpness great. The composition is just right and the framing excellent.
Best wishes,

Hi Gerrit,
I like this sight on a natural and wild landscape, well caught in your setting with the branches creating a frame around it, and adding a good graphism to the composition.
Great work with the light and the colors.
A very nice shot, I like.
Best regards, my friend,
Josep

Hello Gerrit,
I like the the way you framed the view of the sun-kissed mountain and clouds with the contrast between the sunlight on the leaves and the dark slhouettes. The note is interesting and informative. What a smart idea to have a midwinter tropical holiday!!
