The soft rendition in B&W gives a nostalgique feel of the soft focus used in some old photographs, possible to sharpen it still I believe but then you loose that feeling that enhnces well the scene of these children and care for each other in their environment.

Wonderful, Pat, they are just a bit too far, IMO, but I am reminded of the farm administration projects from Lange and consort, as well, as her shots from the appalachians. and aren't these people often at the stage that so many american farmers were during the depression?
There is a striking ballet of stares, all looking away from the camera, save the toddler whose gaze is catching us and dragging us into the frame. all this gives a rythm that is in no way gratuitous, but indeed heightens our feeling of both empathy and distance (they are here, yet, estranged as if fleeing from the scene with their eyes), as if between have and have nots.
Man, this may not be perfect, the pros can tell us, but this is photography at its best it can aspire to for me, we just need to really look into the frame and into these faces, and thru them, then what we see is matched by what is unseen, which gives it its potency and grip.
