Photographer’s Note
The capital city of Guanaja, Bonaca, is seen here from the side of a mountain on the main island of Guanaja. Most of Guanaja's residents live on cays or freestanding houses on stilts, because living near the water is the only way to get away from the pesky sand flies that abound on the mainland. Bonaca is home to around 5,000 people, who are, needless to say, very close neighbors! The cay measures around 1/4 mile by 1/3 mile. The only way to reach it is by boat. Consequently, the entire island of Guanaja has a total of two cars.
