Photographer’s Note

Not much for sale in this market, just a few spring onions... In the WS : also available that day in the same market...

This is the 2nd photo and a detail from a broader view of the same market (posted some months ago , that one without any sharpening or other PP) from the same weekly market of Paillant, a large "commune" above Miragoane (a very small market in the middle of nowhere).

These 3 ladies liked very much the idea of having their portrait taken ; I was attracted by the lady sitting in the centre, as she looked very different from the other persons that I had met in Haiti (probably of another African descent and ethnicity ?), but there is no racism in Haiti, except that some of the mulattos and the white persons consider themselves superior and have generally another standard of living. I guessed that lady was not a mulatto, but not so sure of that...

Since the Duvaliers and Aristide, the mulattos are rarely given positions in the government, but they still form a sort of middle class in Haiti, frequenting better schools and active in the business sector.
