it was easy to decide on the "opening photo" from our last week's trip to Guatemala - a view from the slopes of the active Pacaya volcano towards Volcán de Agua, Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango. I was close to collapsing after scrambling for about an hour up the Pacaya's dry lava, and was seriously cursing myself for dragging a DSLR with me, big lens and all. but I have to admit that this view was worth the effort, worth my buised arms and ruined pants that literally disintegrated on the sharp edges of the lava rocks.
the trip was great. and unusual, for out of more than 1000 photos I have only about 25% are landscapes. the rest, surprisingly enough, are portraits.
RAW, ISO 200, spot metering, 20mm focal length.

your efforts were indeed awrded by this magnificent view of which you ook a magnificent photo with the pyramids strangely rising from the sculpted clouds.
smarcell (19963) 2010-01-26 4:56
Incredible light. The bands on the volcanos are just fantastic. These conditions are a pleasure for a photographer !
pasternak (15181) 2010-01-26 5:06
Wow, this is excellent, light is fantastic of course, from this height the Earth looks very primordial, yet unspoilt by the Man...
baba_flies (8829) 2010-01-26 5:07
Hello Kristine! WOW!!!! This is simply breathtaking and I had to stop working for a moment to enjoy this view. The cloud stripes on the volcanoes are a wonderful element in this picture. Isn't it something to stay above the fog layer and see THIS! Worth every step in my eyes, okay the pants but, hm, buy a new pair :))) Have a great day, Barbara.
romanaa (7966) 2010-01-26 5:16
this is simply fabulous. You must have felt like a goddess with the world lying at your feet. I wish I could be there too.
sevy (15365) 2010-01-26 5:16
For a start of travel book, it is a nice start. Exactly the kind of landscape, mood and photo I like to see and do.
Nice composition with the volcanos like islands in the cloud sea.
I never travelled in central america. I was thinking time to time to go in Costa Rica, but never finalized. It seems Guatemala can be a good choice.
baclama (18279) 2010-01-26 5:21
wow...what the light!!!
colors are wonderful with clouds'sea...
I wait the future shots with impatience

Hello Kristine, what can i say that it hasn't been said before. First of all a very inspired title. Then, a great compo, taken from a perfect POV. It hardly could be better. The warm tones are in contrast with the cold clouds.
Regards and tfs!
Greg1949 (9011) 2010-01-26 6:43
Dreamy landscape here Kristine, glad you got some good clear air for your Guatemala trip. Great color and detail as always.
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2010-01-26 8:15
Hi, Kristine -
Only a thousand photos? On a digital camera?? Amateur!
But this one puts you in a league above - a strenuous effort that absolutely paid off. A bit of luck involved, perhaps, but "luck" favors the prepared. Excellently framed and great lighting.
I'm surprised to be the first one to add this to my favorites.
CLODO (31172) 2010-01-26 9:33
congratulations for your trek with heavy photographic material. I am impressed by the sharpness (no tripod, you missed it!!), the hues on the clouds (low orange sun) and your POV. A dream...
I would have liked to sign this photo.....can you change the owner name????
HimalAnda (10011) 2010-01-26 9:57
What a nice light in the sky and the clouds!
I also like the volcanoes' silhouettes and the shadow in the foreground.
sayeed_rahman (6249) 2010-01-26 10:32
Hey..Ive been waiting for this..wonder if you took a detour and headed for another island, indulging yourself. Ive done that, i know how you could get carried away with good light and high altitude, but did you ?
Yes, these hikes up the mountain can drain you but what we see at the top, its orgasmic or maybe remotely close. I mean you now when you now and feel when you feel, there are a millions making it to the mountains every year and only a handful "feel" it. This is your first and is an assurance that you are one of them who truly "feel" it.
Soft layers in this one, unlike the earlier productions, i know they are coming one at a time. I am sure this was a good photographic journey. But you know what Kristine, to hear you say 25%landscapes and the rests people and other stuff makes me happy and sad, happy more, sad less.
You know why.
Bartleby (13552) 2010-01-26 10:33
well worth the effort indeed! The light is amazing and those silhouetted mountains in the BG just do the trick. Love it.
manudautriche (4348) 2010-01-26 11:03
Superbe paysage par delà les nuages avec cette couleur rouge de fin de journée et ces montagnes si esthétique rend une photo belle et parfaite, bravo.

Jeppo (17645) 2010-01-26 12:11
you seems to be quite surprised when you wrote 75% of your guatemala pics are portraits.
well, local people are very colourful and photo-attractive...so it's almost impossible to resist to.
btw...this is a stunning view...soft sunrise tones kissing the clouds while the sharp shapes of vulcanoes arise from the clouds towel....
ivtchik (836) 2010-01-26 12:46
Une superbe photo pour un paysage magnifique.
J'adore les couleurs du soleil couchant sur la mer de nuage.
delkoo (68) 2010-01-26 12:48
what a moment you caught there ! In such a remote place and marvelous one, i guess the moment was magical and you share well this feeling with us.
I am impatient to see your portaits from Guatemala.
bergese (6699) 2010-01-26 12:52
Une lumiére magnifique et incroyable,un paysage irréel entouré de nuages qui donnent toute la dimension à l'image.
Bonne soirée Isa
chpp (4281) 2010-01-26 18:16
what a vantage POV and spectacular light!
the peaks in the BG look like the egiptian pyramids
very nice job
Waylim (25368) 2010-01-26 18:36
WOW! This picture is out of the world literally. Is this what heaven looks like? Good things don’t come easy and only to those who willing to work for it. Definitely worth the effort. I’m sure your will do it again if you have to. How wonderful to have a cloudy day when you are above it. This is simply not to be asked off, it only happened to those few fortunate people. Congrats. I wish I were there.
rford (30) 2010-01-26 18:54
Fabulous image and marvelous trek ... congratulations and good luck
delpeoples (54173) 2010-01-26 22:19
Hi Kristine, there is an artists whose paintings remind me of this shot, the name escapes me at the moment. Those wisps of cloud and beautiful red hues across the mountains are wonderful, something out of a fairytale. The depth is excellent and I love the composition, with that small piece of land in the FG naturally framing it and leading the eye into the sweet spot. Great job, thanks for sharing it, and have a lovely day, Lisa
PixelTerror (0) 2010-01-26 22:51
Great Pov over the clouds, okay I see your foreground but still it gives the impression it was taken from a place, the light coloring the clouds is great
Have a nice day JY
eversmile (11636) 2010-01-27 0:43
Oooh, what a light! I love how the tops of the mountains, slightly covered with clouds ribbons, becomes like onyx. The warm orange hues of the clouds balance well the dark shapes, and the view is gorgeous. Congratulations!
dkeus31 (27735) 2010-01-27 3:04
this reddish colors in the clouds, I like this a lot!
seems you had a great POV high above the clouds.
the three summits are ink black, but as they aren't big in the picture, it remains good
gunbud (34066) 2010-01-27 6:36
You have left me speechless with this magnificent scene at the top of the world.
Magical how the strong lines of the peaks poke through the thick clouds.
The golden hues against the blue sky is strongly mystical.
rlrad (1845) 2010-01-27 7:23
Let me get this straight - you were on the side of one volcano, above the clouds, shooting a triple portrait of three other volcanoes? And the one you were standing on was active? How intrepid! I'd have ruined my pants AND underwear with that opportunity...
Beautiful result, too. Such nice light and I love the horizontal wisps of the clouds across the distant volcanoes. Your composition is really nice - at first I saw those clouds and thought maybe you took it from a plane until I noticed the craggy black lava rocks in the foreground.
Great note, too, puts me on that spot with you.
npecanhuk (68210) 2010-01-27 8:28
Hello Kristine! A perfect photograph! Breathtaking visual results for the best privileged high pov, exposure, colors, sharpness, dof and composition! TFS - congratulations! My warmest regards, Neyvan

emka (82638) 2010-01-27 23:48
And this photo, marvelous view. It is like I remember it from Pacaya... The vview of other volcanos in the evening light of sunset. And then going down feeling warmth under feet and smelling sulphur... Magnificent shot.
macjake (58920) 2010-01-28 3:07
i'm eagerly waiting to see those portraits!
but this will have to do for now :)
it was worth it taking up your heavy camera and lenses. you would have regreted it if you didnt!
stunning colours, and mountain peaks.
you're actually above the clouds!
great work climbing!

What an amazing view and well worth dragging your DSLR up there. The reflection of the sun on the clouds is stunning too. I would be surprised too if I started taking portraits.
resato (445) 2010-02-02 13:45
oh, yes! I've been there too...the stunning vastness, the colours,
the atmosphere...I can remember. So long ago. I was just a kid, but never forgot the moment and the place. Mi Guatemala querida!
You managed to capture the unique spirit of this place. Thanks!

is this real? What a show of lights. The combination wonderful scenery / perfect moment could not result anything different than a great photography. My compliments!
PS: I was absent for a week and you filled your front page with such colorful photographies...you definitely keep walking :)
niphredil76 (850) 2010-02-08 7:10
What's to say Kristine?
Perfect colors and athmosphere, in a wonderful and smart framing, with the black rocks in the right-down angle balancing the rose clouds on the opposite one.
Smart! and enchanting!
Angshu (56406) 2010-02-10 8:04
I can only see this picture and applaud! A scene which looks out of the world..three active volcanoes, the sea of clouds and the fine framing created by the reddish clouds. Also like the silhouette of the lava-rocks in the FG...excellent!
Elaine_Blath (8509) 2010-02-15 0:26
now this is a stunning photo with exquisite light and taken in amazing place...I exhausted my best adjectives, so let me just say that I love this one...
Take care, Ivana

Beautiful photo and a great portofolio...good luck aheaf!
batalay (36147) 2010-02-24 10:00
Before I saw the lower left corner, and read your note, I was sure this was an arial shot from a low flying DC-3 (they still use them in Central America). I am happy that you made the climb, saddled with a heavy camera, and feel the fatigue vicariously. I happily join the chorus of admirers, 55 and counting, of this gem!

Greet light, colors and POV.
The clods give a special atmosphere.
Congratulations, excellent work, is a pleasure to see a shot like this!
Longroute (19396) 2010-03-01 3:40
Quite a unique view which seems impossibile to imagine (or that one imagines it's impossibile). The three mountains tops emerging from the clouds look like the Pyramids in the Egiptian desert and the clouds stripes on them make it look like an extraterrestrial scenery. So fantastic seems the proper word here.
Your really discover all the best places in the Americas!
crhieatt (5347) 2010-03-22 1:49
Blimey!! (that's a lower class version of) Gosh!!
We should probably reserve words like "spectacular" and "awesome" for views, for moments, like this. If we over use these words, we'll end have having to describe this sort of shot as "mega-awesome" - and then we'll all have to buy skateboards and hang out in the mall.
toni_al (15875) 2010-03-27 16:03
Simplement superbe paysage, belle lumière et POV.
smash2707 (3320) 2010-04-16 17:51

Wow, hello Kristine, what a wonderful morning or evening moment, certainly worth of the hassle of climbing with the horribly heavy backpack full of cameras and lenses. Perfect shot, interesting horizontal lines across the volcanoes, Well done. Kind regards, Michael
BrunoCH (2) 2011-04-08 6:36
I like this picture because of the red color and the clouds passing by the dark mountains. A lovely shoot.

Great shot !
Nice contrast and colors !
Perhaps is the left top corner a little empty but it's a detail ;)
