early morning over Lago de Atitlán, the sun is just rising, the first boats crossing the lake. the dry season in Guatemala does not usually produce dramatic sunrises and sunsets, and this morning was no exception. I was trying to slow down the shutter speed to smooth the water and get just a trail from the passing boat, and would have liked to have an even longer exposure, but I simply ran out of filters. the red colour cast is the pink morning light exaggerated by the 4sec exposure through the stack of filters.
RAW, ISO 100, 57mm focal length, spot metering, additional filters - Cokin P series ND 4, Cokin P series ND Grad 2.

Nice mood but also a good composition with the use of the cloud and the boat track.
It should have been a great moment. Sometimes photo is giving the motivation to wake early and to enjoy such show.

I think your exposure is just right here. Slow enough to capture a smooth glassy look to the water, the trail of the boat is captured nicely and well framed too. Good composition and balance. Impressive colours and light too. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kristine, This is such a beautiful time to be up and about.. you have captured the moment so beautifully. am fascinated at your technical description of using filters. creating a wonderful wake of the boat.. a very serene and peaceful setting - hope you had a great day Rich

I wish I wake up in front of this peacefull landscape, well redlighted by the sunrise. Good use of the long exposure time to flatten the image.

nice to see you back around here. And what a sunset! Beautiful colors! Is that the trail of the passing boat on the right-had side?

A very nice photo, your expertise in handling the exposure is very well evident on this shot. I love how the water turns like into a wet cement, the boat trail is superb, vey nice simple sunset! Put them all together equals a very simply amazing photo!

I think it is a good ideas and creative shot with mixture of red, pink and yello. It is well timed as the sun rises beyond and the slow shutter effect on the water surface is evidence. The balance exposure is just nice here, it is not too bright or dark. And the boat trail is just at the right place. The rich color of the sky is superb and the clouds add to this image.
Great photo effort, Congrats

The exposure is correct, the shutter speed is clever, I believe that you did an excellent work to catch this suggestive scene at sunrise time in the lake, in order to offer us the magic of these fantastic colors in the sky and in the reflections on the water.
I like the sensation of serenity that transmits your composition.

You have created a beautiful effect here. The diagonal trail from the boat is a very important element for the composition. Wonderful colours and clouds.
pasternak (15181) 2011-02-16 1:09
Very interesting shot color-wise, three filters in a row, amazing ;) The mood created is amazing as well, the trail without the boat that produced it creates an eerie impression.

I like pictures of sunset and sunrise because colors and light are so beautiful. This sunrise is splendid, lot of red, simplicity, incredible sky and a nice reflection on the water. Well captured.

I just commented on one of Linda shot on PF, that has the same simplicity but yet so much beauty to appreciate and the clear open view and space gives a great sense of free spirit and peacefulness. the color is a tiny bit hot with too much red for me, but that is a matter of preference in processing. The streak of pattern left behind by the passing boat kind of disrupt the peace of this scenery unfortunately.

Anything that happens leaves traces - like the boat here, like the long exposure, like the filters... like in our life. All the better if we could have such a beautiful result like this, for everything. Bravo!
Thanks for this magnificent view!

Hello dear Kristine
Es jūtos mierīgs un rāms tikai apskatot to. Mēs šeit Sidnejā bija ļoti mitrs dienas, tāpēc šis ezers izskatās idillisko. TFS un es novēlu jums jauki weekend.

Sky on fire, that's a beautiful shot, congrats you were at the right time at the right spot. Excellent red hues and sharpness. Well done.
Your comment about including the hand of the vendor certainly is correct but under the circumstance, I took the shot, it is hardly possible. There are a lot of people and having two boats at this location already is not usual. Finding the right spot despite the crowd is another thing, so in the end, I was happy to get this shot straight without being pushed to the side.

I am impressed by the number of countries you are able to visit in such a short time. Beautiful red image of the sunset with tranquil atmosphere.
danos (88883) 2011-02-25 0:27
dreamily the sunrise colour tints of the sky, as their reflections on the calmly and tranquil surface of the lake. The clouds and the rising sun make the scene even more effective.
Longroute (19396) 2011-02-27 1:41
The appeal of the void... lake, mountains and sky: all empty of everything except the intense light and colours, that is what our souls need. Even the clouds which seem to fill the sky actually are void! Perhaps, like in sculpture, photography is the art of taking things off!
Have a nice Sunday,
Angshu (56406) 2011-02-28 8:10
Very moody shot with the red (various shades of it) and the wake of the boat. The silhouette of the hills create a strong impression as do the darkish clouds with fringing fiery red. Exposure well handled especially on the rising sun even with the long exposure. Well done!
PS : Good to see you posting here...of course I follow you in PF as well
