Tikal is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centres of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is a remote place, the closest larger modern settlements are Flores and Santa Elena, approximately 64 kilometres. Tikal is approximately 303 kilometres north of Guatemala City. It is famous for its many ruins of Mayan pyramids. They are wonderful, there are many photos of them here on TE. The ruins lie among the tropical rainforests of northern Guatemala that formed the cradle of lowland Maya civilization. The jungle is fantastic there. Conspicuous trees at the Tikal park include gigantic kapok (Ceiba pentandra) the sacred tree of the Maya; Tropical cedar and Honduras Mahogany. Regarding the fauna, agouti, white-nosed coatis, gray foxes, Geoffroy's spider monkeys, howler monkeys, harpy eagles, falcons, ocellated turkeys, guans, toucans, green parrots and leafcutter ants can be seen there regularly. Even jaguars, jaguarundis, and cougars are also said to roam in the park. For centuries this city was completely covered under jungle.
It maybe diffcult to spot howler monkeys high in the trees, but for sure you will hear them. As their name suggests, vocal communication forms an important part of their social behavior. Group males generally call at dawn and dusk, as well as interspersed times throughout the day. Howler monkeys are widely considered to be the loudest land animal. According to Guinness Book of World Records, their vocalizations can be heard clearly for 32 km.
Coatis are lovely creatures. They are raccoon-like mammals with a long ringed tail, typically held perpendicular to the body, and a flexible, upturned, elongated snout. Coatis are also distinctive socially. The females live together in highly organized groups called bands, composed of 5-12 allied individuals, while adult males are solitary. They have no fear of the people. They come very close begging for food. They also climb the pyramids.

a fascinating and delightful shot of these wonderful creatures. A clever crop that entices and makes us wonder where they are headed and why. Excellent!

Bonjour, chère Malgo,
Une photographie très intéressante à tous points de vue.
J'imagine la difficulté pour immortaliser ces bêtes étonnantes, car je ne pense pas qu'elles veuillent poser pour la photographe !!!
Très bonne journée.
