Photographer's Note
I dreamt for forty years of going to Mexico and finally I went to Central America in 2001. I liked Mexico very much but ..I was really enthrilled by Guatemala. The people there were wonderful - very poor, exhausted by a long guerilla war but so smiling, ready to help, curious.. I know this photo is not of good quality, the man in the cap in fg is quite unnecessary but 8 years ago one had to enconomize on films and this is the only one I have from the market. I made two close-ups in WS but I prefer broader view.
Chichicastenango is well known for its famous market days on Thursdays and Sundays where vendors sell handicrafts, food, flowers, pottery, wooden boxes, condiments, medicinal plants, candles, pom and copal (traditional incense), cal (lime stones for preparing tortillas), grindstones, pigs and chickens, machetes, and other tools. Next to the market is the 400-year old church of Santo Tomás. It is built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, and the steps originally leading to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization remain venerated. Mayan K'ichee Priestsstill use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. In special cases, they burn a chicken for the gods. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year.
The Mayan civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments, as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created, by some estimates, some 1 million refugees.
Ethnic groups: Mestizo (mixed Amerindian-Spanish - in local Spanish called Ladino) and European 59.4%, K'iche 9.1%, Kaqchikel 8.4%, Mam 7.9%, Q'eqchi 6.3%, other Mayan 8.6%, indigenous non-Mayan 0.2%, other 0.1% (2001 census)

dostrzegam przypadkowosc w tym kadrze... tzn. bylo by do przyjecia (moze nawet by sie ciekawie porobilo) gdyby gentlemana w bejzbolowce na pierwszym planie nie bylo...
podoba mi sie ten latynoski pierdzielnik kolorystyczny...
(nad kolorami bym popracowal)

Jerzy w zasadzie napisał to co sam chciałem. Gdyby nie facet w czapeczce na pierwszym planie - byłoby dużo ciekawiej. Szkoda.
Ale makaki za koloryt się należą.
Pozdrawiam.

Witaj Małgosiu,
Miałaś rację nawołując wczoraj do wstrzemięźliwości w wywoływaniu wiosny.

Pozdrawiam serdecznie,

Hi Malgorzata,
All these persons here standing in a curved line make a very fine compostion of the photo. Another plus here all the colours they wear. A very detailed and interesting picture with a very good note, a true TE contribution!
Kind regards

Maggie,
Very nice daily life shot, showing the colors and market scene of Guatemala. Lots of activities going on. Noise level is a bit high, but not bad, compositionally would be a little better if you could have avoid the man's head in the front. Otherwise, good one. Thanks
