Riding around Santiago the other day, I looked out the side window as we stopped for a light and saw this baseball giants looming over us. Only had time to take a quick shot through the window before the light changed and we were forced to move on. Dominicans are quick on the horn if delayed.
Baseball is hugely popular in the Dominican Republic and there are few boys who don't dream of making millions as ball players. Not surprising, since the percentage of Dominicans playing in the major and minor leagues is very large, given the 9.2 million population of the DR. On the opening day of the 2008 season, there were 239 players born outside the US, with 88 of them Dominicans, by far the largest percentage of an country outside the US.
Even the guys who don't make it beyond the minor leagues earn enough to live well in the country after their playing days are over if they are careful with their money. |
