Photographer’s Note

The island of Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean (not to be confused with The Dominican Republic) is seldom visited by tourists to the area, looking as most are for golden sand beaches and lavish hotels. This is a rugged and hilly place with dark sand beaches for the most part.
Undoubtedly the most interesting place in the island is the Boiling Lake. This is the second largest of its kind in the world (the largest being in New Zealand). It takes about 3 hours of arduous and often very muddy hiking to get there, and the same back. One hikes through lush forest, over sharp ridges, and encounters volcanic rivers, streams and boiling mud. The streams vary in colour from normal clear water to milky blue, black, white, yellow and orange. Steam and sulphur fumes increase the closer you get.
The lake is about 60 meters across. You can get an idea of the scale by the 2 persons on the outcrop on the right of the image.
