The hike to Dominica's eerie boiling lake is absolutely exhausting, but remains the most exciting activity I've undertaken whilst living in the Caribbean.
The hike takes approximately 7 hours in total and covers 6 miles of mountainous terrain. It is essential to take a guide because it's easy to get lost along the way.
No one is certain why the lake is boiling but it is thought that the lake is a fumarole through which gases escape from molton lava below. The lake did in fact stop boiling for a while in 2004 which puzzled many people.
