“Sir Winston Churchill puffed Havana cigars in its stately rooms. Frank Sinatra sampled Cuban rum punches at the bar.

Havana's Hotel Nacional, which has received a long list of international celebrity guests in its 68-year history, has been declared a national monument.

The 464-room hotel, which dominates the Havana seafront, received the distinction in a special ceremony Saturday night attended by the city's historian, Eusebio Leal, and other Cuban officials.

Cuba's National Monuments Commission described the hotel as one of the architectural landmarks of Havana.

The ceremony included the firing of one of two 100-year-old cannons that stand in the hotel gardens, which once housed a Spanish gun battery during Cuba's 1898 War of Independence.

The Hotel Nacional was inaugurated on Dec. 30, 1930. It was built by a U.S. construction company, Purdey and Henderson, from a design by American architects.

In 1933, it was briefly occupied by mutinous military officers and was bombarded by government forces.
In the 1940s and 1950s, when Havana was a tourist playground for Americans, the hotel received a stream of famous guests, including Nat ``King'' Cole, Marlon Brando and other entertainers, writers and celebrities.

It figured in British writer Graham Greene's spy spoof novel, ``Our Man in Havana.''
Following Cuba's 1959 revolution, the hotel remained a favorite destination for foreign visitors. It is currently run by the Cuban state hotel chain Gran Caribe. “

We don't often see hotel interiors, so it was a good idea to show us this imposing hotel in Cuba. The perspective view works well with a wonderful symmetry. I like the reflections in the shiny floor. Well done

Olá Rui,
É um daqueles sítios algo lendários de Havana que gostaria de conhecer. A captura está admirável atendendo a que é um interior, com um bom enquadramento e exposição. É curioso, "bastaram" f.11 e 1/40, deve ser bem melhor iluminado do que parece na foto; ou então fizeste um PP excelente...
Gosto tb. muito do WS, aquela cadeira vazia leva-me a imaginar como deve saber bem ficar por ali uns tempos agarrado a uns mojitos.
