Photographer's Note

The Battle of Santa Clara was a series of events in late December 1958 that led to the capture of the Cuban city of Santa Clara by revolutionaries under the command of Che Guevara. The battle was a decisive victory for the rebels fighting against the regime of General Fulgencio Batista: within 12 hours of the city's capture Batista fled Cuba and Fidel Castro's forces claimed overall victory. It features prominently on the back of the three convertible peso bill.
Guevara, who viewed the capture of the train as a priority, successfully mobilized the tractors of the school of Agronomy at the university to raise the rails of the railway. The train was therefore derailed as it transported troops away from the Capiro hill[citation needed]. The officers within tumbled out asking for a truce. At this, ordinary soldiers, whose morale was very low, began to fraternise with the rebels, saying that they were tired of fighting against their own people. Shortly afterwards the armoured train was in the hands of the rebels and its 350 men and officers were transported as prisoners.
The train contained a considerable amount of weaponry, a huge bonus to revolutionary forces, and it was to become a basis of further attack in the hands of both the rebels and supportive peasants. Various reports have suggested that the surrender of the train and the truce were pre-arranged, relying on payments made to the officers by the 26th of July Movement. Guevara himself described how the men were forced out by a volley of molotov cocktails, causing the armoured train to become a "veritable oven for the soldiers".
The capture of the train, and the subsequent media broadcasts from both the government and the rebels proved to be a key tipping point in the revolution. Despite the next day's newspapers hailing Batista's "victory" at Santa Clara, contrary broadcasts from Castro's rebel forces accelerated the succession of army surrenders. The reports ended with the news that rebel leaders were heading "without let or hindrance" towards Havana to take over the Government.In this pic the monument to the train attacked.

ASSALTO AL TRENO

La Battaglia di Santa Clara fu uno scontro armato avvenuto tra le 5:00 del mattino del 29 dicembre 1958 ed il mezzogiorno del 1º gennaio 1959 nell'ambito della rivoluzione cubana, di cui Santa Clara costituisce l'ultima appendice militare. Il netto successo dei castristi fu decisivo per la sconfitta del governo tirannico di Fulgencio Batista e per la vittoria del Movimento del 26 di luglio.
Guevara capì che a quel punto la conquista del treno carico di armi e munizioni era prioritaria: il Che prese i trattori agricoli che si trovavano nella facoltà di agraria e sollevò le rotaie, costringendo il convoglio a fermarsi. Tutto il suo contenuto venne sequestrato e i 350 ufficiali che si trovavano dentro furono arrestati, mentre i loro soldati semplici passarono dalla parte dei castristi.
Il treno conteneva una notevole quantità di armi che costituirono un grande vantaggio per le forze rivoluzionarie, dato che il bottino divenne la base di un ulteriore attacco effettuato da Guevara e dal comandante (appartenente al Segundo fronte nacionàl) statunitense William Alexander Morgan contro le truppe regolari.
Molti batistiani si arresero, ma altri preferirono continuare a combattere, usando il treno ormai fermo come riparo: Guevara diede l'ordine di gettare delle bombe Molotov dentro il mezzo attraverso i finestrini (da dove sbucavano i fucili dei governativi) in modo tale che il treno diventasse, per usare le sue stesse parole, "un vero forno per i soldati"; tale tattica si dimostrò vincente.
La cattura del treno fu considerata, a posteriori, un evento simbolico: essa rappresentava il passaggio di consegne al vertice dello Stato cubano tra Fulgencio Batista e Fidel Castro, sebbene il giorno dopo la battaglia i giornali di destra riportarono la notizia della "vittoria di Batista". Tale notizia, tuttavia, fu rapidamente smentita dai fatti, poiché gli insorti, lasciato un presidio a Santa Clara, proseguirono senza contrasto la loro marcia verso l'Havana.

leggendo il titolo e guardando la foto non riuscivo a capire il nesso e che minkia era quel bussolotto rosso con una stele vicina. Poi, leggendo le utili e interessanti note ho capito tutto ed ho apprezzato appieno la foto ed il suo significato. Bravo, non solo per l'eccellente qualità fotografica, ma soprattutto perchè testimoni che Cuba non è solamente paesaggi esotici e vecchie case coloniali, ma ha anche una interessante storia da raccontare. Complimenti!

nota molto interessante. spesso pure un vagone ferroviario é in grado di diventare un simbolo (come la carrozza ferroviaria dove il Kaiser firmò l'armistizio nel 1918 ed "estratta" dal museo di Compiègne per far firmare l'armistizio ai francesi stessi nel 1940)

Che dire? Che hai scattato una validissima foto, ottimi i colori, perfetto il cielo nuvoloso e vagamente minaccioso. Ma forse questo non basta. Allora dirò che, avevo 15 o 16 anni ed ero perdutamente invaghita del Che. Un figo! Quando é morto ho pianto. Invece adesso vomiterei addosso a Fidel Castro. Che ha affamato la sua gente. Sono stata a Cuba, con mio marito, che l'aveva vista prima della rivoluzione, ci sono venuti i brividi. Ma trattasi, ovviamente, solo di una mia personale e trascurabile opinione.

Un endroit très populaire, je l'ai visité aussi lors d'une vacances à Cayo Santa Maria. La prise de vue permet de voir les détailsa et les couleurs du wagon et du monument. La présence des visteurs donne de la vie à l'image. Le ciel nuageux donne un bon contraste aux couleurs de l'image. Bon dimanche.
