Photographer's Note

A short bus tour from Varadero takes you out into the countryside to see the macheteros (machete wielding men) at work cutting the long sugarcane stocks. Of course, the macheteros are there for the tourists, as the harvests have been done mechanically for a long time.

After trying your hand at cutting the plant yourself, you can munch on the fresh stock. Later in the tour you can taste Guarapo, an iced drink which is made by putting a sugarcane stock through a press to squeeze out all the juice.
