Yes, you're seeing it correctly, another person, another human being in my photo!
When you're in Cuba, especially in Havana, the people photo opps are endless.
As we were just simply walking the local streets, I approached this lady sitting at the front steps of her Casa. She's outside watching, keeping a close eye on two children playing to her left.
I wasn't about to let this opportunity slip away from me, so I asked if it was OK to take some photos and she kindly agreed.
Because I was using my ultra wide angle lens, I had to get very very close to her, again, she didn't mind at all.
Hope you like it

The travels change us. you make the photos of people, not "architecture", I, travelling in winter, became night shooter. Nice photo of the Cuban woman, very natural.
looking forward to more peoples photos.

here is a different type of composition with human figure using a low POV. The distorted effect, created by this angle is very interesting. Really enjoyable one. Like the skin tone too. Very good one Craig. Thanks for sharing it.

It is a lovely candid shot; no pretention, no egotism, just a mother, being a mother!
Lovely composition with natural guides to lead from l/r across the frame. Then, with a little time, it's possible to follow the opposite diagonal and have a peek inside the room! Just can't avoid it!
Have a lovely day,

A fine capture of this watchful lady sitting on step with her rollers firmly in place. A well composed image with good colours and clarity. I like the slightly defiant pose she strikes.

Hello dear Craig,

Very well obeserved and captured.

no sooner do I see Jason's shot of a pink rear and we have more pink - well I think you get the gist....TE is a strange place at the moment, just commented on Lisa's bronze addition to the mix. That aside this is a wonderful study, full of the attraction of everyday life and also the character of the place. I like the colour co-ordinated hair rollers too! Magic!
Have a good week - B.

Outside your photographic skills, what I appreciate in this portrait is the class of the lady who matches the colors of her curlers with the colors of her skirt and halter top. I will have a word with my significant other about that :)
abmdsudi (35340) 2013-12-16 5:07
What a cheery and fantastic portrait, awesome street people photography in vibrant colors perfectly arranged in this orientation and bags of detail to view within this strict frame. Clarity is just lovely but I love the dark space which further adds atmosphere and contrast to her outfit. A charming mama and joy to view, Cheers!

olive224 (2717) 2013-12-16 7:20
Nice portrait shot ;) i like the matching colors between hairs and clothes ;)
holmertz (33511) 2013-12-16 9:37
I guess if you have to get that close it's always safest, and nicest, to ask for permission. There is always a risk that the person will look stiff and uncomfortable and unnatural, but this lady posed very well by just not caring. She's really fabulous. Her skin matches the entrance, her curlers match her clothes and all of her matches the wall.
worldcitizen (6023) 2013-12-16 9:41
This is also so typically Cuban: women with large, plastic rollers in their hair. :-) This particular woman has everything coordinated: her rollers, her clothes, and even the wall! I've shown your first three photos to my mom, and they remind her of her childhood. BTW, my Cuban grandma is staying with us at the moment, and she had her large, plastic rollers on the other night. ;-)
yquem46 (37494) 2013-12-16 9:55
With your ultra wide angle, you must have been sooooooooo close, unless you cropped afterwards !
So Cuba again ! With my personal attraction for street scenes and portraits, I bet I'd like this country
An excellent one here, very colorful and natural
bravo, all the best

this is a great street shot. I love the use of wide angled lens for street photography and this is a fine example. She is so well framed with her sitting position creating nice diagonal - always good compositionally. Attractive colours of mostly pink and blue. A bonus peak into the house interior too.
parvatibb (1295) 2013-12-16 13:27
What a a sweet and lovely smile! I like the matching color of her dress and hair curler. Great presentation.

Holy cow, it's Armageddon...another picture featuring an actual person! :) Do I detect a slight shift in subject material perhaps...this is a bit uncharacteristic my friend?? This is terrific though, a real slice of daily life.
I've always thought that the people in these kinds of places tell so much more of a story than anything else possibly ever could. Even in it's simplest form, a local sitting on her front steps watching the children play down the street, has a good deal of emotion and appeal.
I like the use of the wide angle too, but it is rather awkward getting that close, yeah? I took a close up of a cowboy and felt like I was crawling right up his nose getting the camera just inches from his face. It has a great effect though. Super pink/blue combo again, clothes and curlers...she's one with the exterior wall! :)
Sweet shot, bring on more!
jjcordier (69571) 2013-12-16 21:53
Ton grand angle t'a permis un original et excellent cadrage de cette femme cubaine qui a eu le bon goût d'assortir la couleur de ses bigoudis à ses habits. Excellente photo.
Noel_Byrne (16219) 2013-12-17 2:07
Her smile is brilliant. Her smile says to me, I know something you dont know, a cheeky and friendly smile, she is obviously happy to have your presence close by, that shows well. But in seeing that, even know she knows you are there, there is nothing staged about this shot, it looks perfectly natural and she looks at ease as you took this so perfectly in her environment. Great portrait shot, something I always admire!
All the best
mirosu (10186) 2013-12-17 4:57
Excellent snapshot. Smart tight crop choice to accentuate the woman with splendid sharpness, nice colors, excellent light and very good POV choice. Well framed in square format.
delpeoples (50271) 2013-12-17 12:35
Hehehe if you'd come up to me whilst sitting in my rollers and house clothes, wanting to shoot me with a wide angle lens - I'd have KILLED you :). So this lady must be absolutely lovely to have agreed to this. What a wry look she's got on her face. It's as if she's thinking, "I'm half-dressed, the hair's a mess, I've no make up but I still don't scrub up too bad" - and she's right. And she's probably thinking "and this poor honky, he's even worse off than me, mad as a cut snake!" Hahaha a great shot. I love how close you got and the beautiful definition and skin tones you achieved. And full marks to your model, what a great lady she must be.

Hi Craig, I was in Old Port Havana and I saw a lot of people like to sit on the step in front of the building to watch the activities in the street. I think that is big part of their lives. It is a very good angle taken from the side so the lady would not seem too big even though she is big size. Good manage with the lights which resulting great details. Thank very much
kato (10577) 2013-12-17 23:07
You're capturing well this portrait by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see her casual/colorful clothes and friendly look and architecture with steps, entrance and blue wall. She is watching her children's action gently, and it looks like humorous her hair band a bit. It's a natural and warm daily life shot.
CLODO (27498) 2013-12-18 2:57
welcome in the world of "street photography". You started well with the comprehensive behaviour of your subject, and the wide angle does not distort her so much. I like her relax position, and the sweet hues in accordance: clothes, wall and even hair rollers!
A woman will always stay a woman!
tyro (16748) 2013-12-18 3:40
I really love this one! It really is great that you are moving out of your little comfort zone of photographing buildings and now moving to people too. And, looking at this picture and the happy demeanour of this lovely lady, I'm sure that she made it really easy for you - she just looks so kind and friendly and so obliging too. How nice of her to pose so comfortably like this for you!
And her pose doesn't look at all "staged" - it looks perfectly natural as I am sure it was. You have caught her in her own environment perfectly and it's quite sad to see her smartly dressed in bright colours against the backdrop of her own rather poor, dull and dreary home.
A really lovely photograph and one of which you should be proud. I'm just wondering if you could find her address and send her a copy of this picture? I'm sure she'd love that.
Cricri (95391) 2013-12-18 5:33
Très sympathique dame, très cool dans sa position, comme si elle était habituée qu'on la prenne en photo, j'aime sa tenue rose et bleu dont elle a associer les mêmes couleurs a ces bigoudis :-)très joli portrait

good shot. Fine street portrait is here. Good quality, interesting comment in note.
Have a nice evening.

nice the 'portrait' of the woman as watching her children as playing.I like her carefree presentation in the frame, the grooming of her hair as the details of her house.A good reportrge shot from the capital.
gus72 (3717) 2013-12-19 21:38
Hi Craig !!
I am glad that she was so obliging....she seem very relaxed and in a pose that is so natural when you are NOT the subject in a photo.
rusty gates ( to control de children ) and some interesting details inside the house.
You have every right to be proud of this magnificent image.
Gigidusud (11649) 2013-12-20 12:42
What class lady has her curlers matching her clothes! Great portrait, I like especially because I'm hairdresser ;)

You are bringing back very happy memories of our trip to Cuba. This lady is superb with her hair rollers matching her clothes! I love the way the Cubans sit on the steps to their houses watching the people walk by. An excellent portrait with lovely colours and textures.
Kind Regards, Ann
SWEETFREEDOM (20584) 2013-12-24 23:41
i am a too shy potographer to take a picture like this one. i understand how much close you must have been using an 8-16 mm lens. beautiful portrait, she is posing for you in a very natural way without any kind of embarassing.
serp2000 (35072) 2013-12-28 10:29
Yes, this is just historical event. First time in my life I am writing a critique for your photo from Sri Lanka.
And I must say from Ceylon's point of view this is very interesting work, amazing capture of a daily life scene. Good skills of the photographer, perfect quality.
Have a good time and Happy New Year!
InasiaJones (30736) 2013-12-29 22:27
Be careful putting your finger in this photographic approach, you might become addicted! As you get in contact with people and getting comfortable at it, you realize that talking with locals, getting friendly with them and creating human contact enrich your travel experience like nothing else can do.
And as you get deeper into shooting people, you learn to choose your subject for their special personality, for something unique that emanates from them, and this is what you have done here, with this sympathetic person, matching with her environment, as well as with her clothes and hair rolls.
You have chosen a very good subject to illustrate Cuban lifestyle in the city, as people live in the streets candidly, and socialize with their neighbors.
This is good stuff Craig, keep doing it!!
Wishing you a great holiday season!
