This, well, is simply the night version of my day version of the Hotel Atlantis, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. This photo was taken about an hour after the first version, from approximately the same location.
I should have probably taken it a little earlier to even out the light a bit more, especially in the tower tops which are overexposed. I liked this version for the colors in the sky and palm trees more than the hotel though. Maybe I'll have to go back one day and try it a little earlier though...
For those who don't know anything about the hotel. It is a small homely little hotel that happens to be one the biggest hotels in the Caribbean. Suites that go up to $25,000 USD per night, one of the largest casinos in the world and probably the nicest beach I have ever been on. Crystal clear water and white sand that makes the toes tingle. Plus, most people there are so caught up in the restaurants, water slides (through shark tanks of course), aquariums, spa, casino, museum, up scale shops and everything else the hotel offers that not many make it to the beach. Which is a great thing if you like a beach where you can spread out and not worry about masses of people.
Now, although it is a "kitsch" hotel I do want to say that the architecture was amazing, the hotel was run very well and all the animals in the pools and aquariums around the hotel were well taken care of. So, I have to hand it to the hotel for taking care of things. It was a bit big for my taste but a sight to see nonetheless.
For this photo I used a 2 stop ND filter on the top half to get the unreal looking reflection. Pre-processing instead of post-processing if you think about it.
Thanks for any comments or critiques.

Lovely colours and reflexes... but that "little hotel" is too fancy and expensive for me... I´m sorry!

Nice picture, beautiful colours and composition.
The hotel may look fancy, but it's even better when you are there :)

ANother perfect night shot. Excellent exposure, POV and composition. The symmetry of the relections are nice too.

It's as good as the day version, though the OE (tip of each spire) brightly removes those details. Overall the image is remarkable, the luminous glow in the sky, super clarity and sharpness, amazing what those Canon G series can do too! I almost got the G6 but instead I got the 350D for the same price.

Wow, this is like a dream....amazing colors and love the shapes and reflections...beatuiful. TFS

I am sorry but somehow this image does not seem right to me. The water is dead calm that it reflect exactly the image of the hotel. Not even a ripple. The structure on the right seems to be leaning inward somehow. I agree with you, it does seem overexposed at the top where the lights are most concentrated. Could this be due to you using a wide angle. Considering the view point of the camera you obviously did not tilt your camera that much upward. Very noteworthy narration John.

Wow what a great photo! The reflection is so good you could flip it over and not tell the difference. Wonderful colours throughout the photo and well framed. Thanks for sharing,

amazing colors of this night scene with the clear reflextion.
excellent compo, expo, etc.
Cormac (26545) 2007-07-25 19:45
Perfect symmetry! The reflection is almost like a mirror, so smooth is the water, and so well balanced is the reflection. Perfect exposure too, with the lighting in the building good, and even some light in the sky to show the colour and texture of the sky. Well done!
siolaw (37640) 2007-07-25 20:08
I don't see any problem with the reflection being perfect due to still water! Quite the opposite i'd say! I recently saw a documentary about thishotel island... they are building many more things there too, it seems!
Nice light and exposure, sufficient sharpness. It would vbe nice to see more photo info, such as focal lenght and shutter speed though!

Amazing, A mirror! Just like the name of this place, Paradise Island! I like the design of this Atlantis Hotel, it out look just like a Palace. The sky still not very dim, dazzling light, good sharpeness and good contrast, distinct image, perfect work.

Nice picture. The reflection is really impressive!!!!

Hi John, I like this kind of symmetrical shot. You could flip it upside down, and probably 99% of us would never know it. Your composition is excellent. The light is great, bright in fact for a nightshot. They are obviously not concerned about hydro at that hotel. Reading your notes, I can see why. Colour is very nice. Those palms add just enough to give it a really nice touch.

Excellent shot, very good framing and contrast. Nice reflections. Amazing place

Really excellent framing here John, with a great balance between buildings and reflection.
I think you've overdone the PP though - noise reduction/softening, sharpening and especially saturation are all way over the top. There's also some nasty pixelation in the sky, but that's probably just due to the downsizing for posting here. That said, if you hadn't applied any sharpening to the sky this pixelation would have been less noticeable.
I'd say it's definitely worth another go, there's a lot of potential here.

Your composition is great with an excellent reflection. The reflection gives the photo nice balance and symmetry. The lighting and colors are great with nice sharpness and detail.

It is difficult to imagine that something so beautiful actually exists.
Your picture is perfect John.....no complaints....its great shot. Wish I had enough space left to save it to my favourites.

Truly fantastic! I love the treatment you did , I love the slightly distorted reflection. right out of a dream. Excellent!
pboehringer (770) 2007-07-26 21:54
John, I know this hotel from a movie with Pierce Brosnan. I can't remember the name of it, but I have to say that the cameraman could a learn a lot of good photography with you. Despite the overexposure of the towers top you achieved an excellent level of photography on this here. A ND grad might have helped to avoid this overexposure, but hey - this is an outstanding shot and I would be more than glad if it would be in my collection.
Dpbours (222) 2007-07-27 2:01
Nice reflection! Think I made the same comment on the previous shot, but not entirely sure... Perhaps it would have been interesting to take the horizon out of the middle. Just an idea!

I think that your night shot is more magical than the day version. Here, the colours are fantastic, especially the colours of the palmtrees.I also like the blue sky reflecting in the water that is a perfect mirror. This photo is so beautiful that I can't imagine that it is possible to get it better even if you try earlier.Congratulations.

Excellent....no more comments

A most engaging note accompanying this excellent shot. The reflection is perfect, suggesting you've poste two photos for the price of one. Moreover, it appears to be remarkably well define for a tripodless shot.
Many thanks for the note on the young woman sipping an early morning beer on her Renault (converted by a number of TE viewers from a Yugo). It appears that she did have a companior, not seen in the photo.
I am back from a month of sailing in the Mediterranean, rejuvenated, and in possession of a myriad new images to post...gradually.

Another beautiful photo of the Hotel Atlantis, I like the day picture better, but it's nice to see it at night with all the lights on too!
This hotel is definitely too rich for my blood, I've never been to the Bahamas, but hopefully someday. Did you stay in this hotel? What are the cheapest rooms to stay in? Do you have any pictures of the surrounding area? I'd be interested in seeing what is on either side of this hotel. I'm guessing more hotels!

Looks like a sci-fi town, unreal, closed to the common people (too expensive)...
That's interesting, that's well realized and that's amazing too...
keribar (43841) 2007-08-29 0:33
Very professional excellent picture of the hotel..
worldcitizen (5609) 2007-09-13 15:28
As many before me have already said, this photo is gorgeous!! I definitely like it more than the day version because of the blue tones in the sky and the lights of the hotel. The fact that only certain rooms have their lights on makes an interesting pattern. The reflection is spotless, and there are gems of color to be found, such as the illuminated palm trees. I bet Atlantis would love this for a brochure cover!! :-)
kLe (2196) 2007-09-24 14:59
The reflection is excellent, perfect and makes the picture. In my opinion, the building appears a little blurry and this does not help. I think also that the composition is perhaps too simetric in both the horizontal and vertical axis.
But the reflection is so great and difficult to get that makes the photo worthy. It remember me one photo of mine called "El Pilar" that was appearing at the same time as your on the cover page of TE.
