[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot was taken inflight from Caracas to Frankfurt. After departing a bit early we saw this scenery on the right side of the plane while the sun setted on the other. Can anyone explain these strange stripes at the horizon? This phenomenom lasted for about 10min. and went from the left to the right of the entire horizon. It looked incredible but I can't explain it. I have other shots of it with the wing in foreground...

i have no clue about the stripes..maybe the different layers of the atmosphere (ozone layer maybe)reflect different colours during the sunset/sunrise, when the angle between impacting and reflecting rays is close to the 0 deg,and the rays just don't go directly through to the observer, so they can be more recognizable(its like to look from the plane to the house,,you will see just a roof, but take a sideview and you will see moore)...just my primitive theory :-))...you said, you didn't make any PP. what kind of compression do you use. The nosie is very vissible (didn't you adjusted the contrast??)

I think it has a lot to do with the perspective of how your looking at the atmosphere. I agree with hpbaxxter. I think I showed you this website before. http://www.atoptics.co.uk/rayshad.htm
After looking through the website trying to find this phenomenon I noticed the earth's shadow. This is the only phenomenon that i can compare it to.
Really interesting photo though. I'd like to see the other shot with the wing too.
