Photographer’s Note
My first post - so apologies if I've got the resolution/format wrong.
This is by the shores of Lake Karakul, up in the high Pamir mountains of Xinjiang Province, China. It is pretty much the end of the Chinese portion of the Silk Road (at least, one of it's several variants) and is not far from the Karakorum Highway.
The mountain is Mustagh Ata, 7,546m, which means 'Father of Ice Mountains'. There is a small area of semi-fertile land around the lake where Kyrgyz nomads have their summer grazing for yaks, goats and camels as well as the ubiquitous stocky asian horses. The accomodation here is almost entirely in yurts and you only need to wander around the lake for a while to be invited to stay the night (in return for a small fee!) with a family.
The camel is a baby belonging to the family I stayed with.
The area is extremely beautiful and is not particularly hard to get to - the bus from Kashgar to Pakistan over the Karakorum Highway goes past the lake and you can ask to be dropped off. I theory you can then flag down a bus coming the other way to get back to Kashgar - but that's only theory!

Wonderful mountain scenery and fabulous colours. Stunning contrasts. I love the banded effect you have here: blue sky, white mountains, brown hills, turquiose lake and green grass. The camel is a good addition to the picture and is perfectly positioned. Informative note too.
Welcome to TE, Robin. I hope to see lots more of your stuff here!

Hi Robin,
Welcome to TE !
Excellent start with a beautiful view that fully complies with the true TE spirit, the mountain is impressive and I like hot its massive structure rises over the lake, the lonely camel adds a presence in this so remote area, colors are great.
In addition to this nice view, you join a very interesting note and for this you win my special award as I find this part of the post too often neglected here, bravo !!!
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Couleurs et paysage incroyablement magnifiques. Bonne idée d'y avoir intégré ce chameau afin que l'on se rende compte de la taille du paysage. Toute mes félicitation pour cette splendide prise de vue.

Hello Robin, your photo is superb. I haven't words for this job. The constrast between the shadows and light is perfect, and the composition is very pleasant. Very good job.

Robin -
I'd been thinking about going to Kashgar and was looking at photos, when I found this one. Extraordinary! The colors and the play of light and shadow are really remarkable and remarkably well captured. The lake is not a color I've seen in other photos of Karakul (all of which were taken from the other end). I wouldn't have recognized the camel for what it is, though, except for the title and the note.
Now tell me, how DID you get back to Kashgar?
