The woman selling gata near the Geghard Monastery.
Gata (Armenian: գաթա gatʿa; also sometimes transliterated as Gatah (Eastern Armenian) or Katah (Western Armenian)) is an Armenian pastry, similar to a coffee cake. It can be found in a variety of shapes, sizes and may be decorated or left unadorned.
One popular variety is gata with koritz (khoriz), a filling that consists of flour, butter and sugar. Gata can have other fillings such as nuts, most commonly walnuts. Some variations include placing a coin inside the dough before the gata is baked, and it is said that whoever is the lucky one to receive the piece with the coin is to be blessed with good fortune. Gata from the villages of Garni and Geghard are decorated (with dough before baking) delicious breads that are round in shape and generally about a foot in diameter.
We couldn't resist temptation and bought half of it. It was delicious!
Interesting also the thing on the right. They are something like sheets of paper, made from juice of various fruits. Sour in taste, also very good. Better view of them here .
I hope that Gert will like it (the photo only :)).

i want to buy some gata and also the coloured paperlike things on the right :-) ... the piece of cake on the table really looks delicious and your description makes it all the more tempting. Fine daily life photograph and the situation is depicted really well with fine composition and the perfect moment captured.

Not having a sweet tooth, I could probably resist these pastries; on the other hand they sound as if they might go down well with a good cup of coffee:-) An excellent street capture, cleverly framed and benefiting from a very pleasant light.

J'aime beaucoup cette scène de la vie quotidienne. La dame conserve un air très sévère en faisant goûter son pain, mais le geste est généreux sous cette très belle lumière.

Another wonderful Caucasus photo!
Her sweater is set off by the grey wall so perfectly, bringing such vibrancy to the fruit and bread. Terrific light management too.

Yes Malgo, I like the photo but I wouldn't touch anything ;-).
Both photos are actually very good. In the WS we see the lovely looking bread and the sweet sheets better, and the red umbrella is very eye-catching, but I think you made the right decision to use this as the regular upload because of the connection between the saleswoman and the customer and the horizontal lines made by her arms. It gains a lot from being seen in the larger version.

This is a charming street scene, even though the gatah-seller looks a bit serious: I guess it's a serious business as her livelihood depends on it. I like the receiving hands in the frame, and the crop works to exclude any extraneous material irrelevant to your subject. Good note, too.

Ciao cara Itchy Feet
Oooh it is just before dinner and I am hungry. I wish I could have some gata, they sound delicious, as do the fruit strips on the right. A nice close up of this lady and her wares. And of course, we get to share part of your journey and enjoyment of this country's amazing culture.
Excellent work, thanks for sharing, hugs

The photo and the title remind me of a joke. A young businessman, walking daily past a pretzel seller, deposits his 35 cent payment for a pretzel, and with a smile he keeps walking on, without ever taking a pretzel. Day after day, year after year this happens. The woman never acknowledges the man's generosity, except one day, she points to a new sign, and says, "The price of the pretzels is now 40 cents!"
It looks tasty,

This looks very tasty, interesting note about this Gata cake.
Looks a nice sunny day, well managed especially the light.
Wonderful, love seeing these daily life scene's and with the local traditional food.
Ps, Sorry for the lack of response lately but just sold our house on Monday and the pressure on to find another.

This photo is excellently composed: The lady giving the gatah is in full view, with none of her essential features missing. Only the hands of the recipients are visible keeping the focus on the lady. Very well done!
I think the Turkish equivalent of gatah is kete. The fruit rolls in Turkish are pestil.
