From Garni we went to Lake Sevan and Sevanavank, another monastery built in a breathtaking place.
Lake Sevan is one of the largest fresh-water high-altitude lakes in the world, at the altitude of 1,900 m above sea level.
In 1910 Soukias Manasserian, one of the civil engineers behind the interventions that caused the Aral Sea disaster, published a study Evaporating billions and stagnation of the Russian Capital, which suggested the lowering of the lake's surface to 45 metres and the use of the water for irrigation and hydroelectricity.
In Joseph Stalin's era the plan was slightly modified: the water level would be reduced by 55 metres (5 metres more than suggested by Manasserian), the perimeter would shrink to 80 km and the volume to only 5 km³. Nut and oak trees would be planted on newly acquired land, and introducing some trout species into the remainder of the lake would increase fishery production tenfold.
An ecological disaster like in the Aral Sea was avoided when the Stalinist era ended in 1956 and the project and its consequences were reviewed thoroughly. As there were difficulties with planting oaks and nut trees, and with fishery, the Sevan Committee was established with the mission "to raise the level as much as possible". In 1962 the water level stabilized at 18 metres below the original level, but two years later the lake started to "bloom" due to eutrophic algae.
Sevanavank is a monastic complex located on a peninsula at the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan. Initially the monastery was built at the southern shore of a small island. After the artificial draining of a lakethe island transformed into a peninsula.
According to an inscription in one of the churches, the monastery of Sevanavank was founded in 874 by Princess Mariam, the daughter of Ashot I (who became a king a decade later).
The monastery was strict as it was mainly intended for those monks from Etchmiadzin who had sinned. Jean-Marie Chopin, a French explorer of the Caucasus, visited there in 1830 and wrote of a regimen restraining from meat, wine, youth or women. (After Wikipedia)
As often, two other nice views of the lake and monastery in Workshops.

What a superb composition from that picturesque place. I like the old church guarding the whole landscape.
Have a fine week.

Thanks for your visit to my photo - it took a long time to post it after the previous one.
I see you are still travelling the world. It's about a year since you were here in Melbourne.
Your photo is a lovely capture of the imipressive monastery set against a snowy and watery background. Well exposed to keep the detail in the snow.

As always, you have written a very interesting and thoughtful note about this place and also provided three wonderful photographs for us to enjoy.
I love all three pictures but I think your main picture is my favourite. The monastery really is quite small, isn't it? But you've made a fine composition here with the octagonal/conical roof perfectly placed in the frame, with good "lead in" lines from the foreground stonework and a fine view across the lake to the snow covered distant hills.
In all three pictures, the light is lovely, the colours are beautifully vibrant and the details and sharpness are exquisite.

A composition to savour! The wall makes an excellent lead-line toward the church from which we can take in the beautiful surrounding landscape. Very pleasant light and agreeable colours. Sharpness is excellent with superb rendering of the textural detail in the stonework.

Complimenti. Una foto meravigliosa!
Ciao e buona settimana

Piekna kompozycja i kolorystyka.

Also your both workshop pictures are very nice, really almost a winter picture taken April 2014.
Perspective and depth care for a good picture.
Excellent composition, with a good sharpness and clarity.
Very well done, TFS.

Quelle belle carte postale. L'endroit est superbe et magique et a la plus belle vue possible sur le lac et les montagnes enneigées au loin. L'église est parfaitement placée dans l'image.

Wow ..... that most wonderful place, masterfully captured for our enjoyment, this lovely church we see in the foreground, with its many volumes, superb view of the lake surrounded by snowy mountains.
Very well balanced lighting and very good sharpness.
Well done. I love it.
Wish you a very nice day.
Best wishes, my friend.
P/D. Easter has been a relaxation in my home town, next to the mountains of Gredos, the sun shone and the temperature was fantastic, I hope yours has been fantastic.

With all the snow and the grey stone buildings here, I get a feeling of a very forlorn and deserted place. An interesting view and some very good pictures. I enjoy this composition with the angle of the low wall, leading up to the church with its tower at the harmonic third.

I was disappointed when my marshrutka from Tbilisi to Yerevan didn't go near Sevan. I had hoped to get at least a brief view of the lake. Now I have to make up that loss with your photos, which is not a bad idea because they are all very interesting and with great views of the snow-covered scenery. This church doesn't look as refined as the others, but I suppose that if the monks here were not lallowed wine or women they should not enjoy any really nice architecture either.

Thanks for sharing,

to zdjecie naprawde wyszlo swietnie - moje szczere gratulacje. Nie ma do czego sie przyczepic :-)
Warunki pogodowe jak na zime wyraznie sprzyjaly, delikatne swiatlo ozywia kolory i dodaje calosci sporo uroku. Bardzo dobrze wybrany POV i swietna perspektywa.
Nie zmienilabym niczego!

Hello Malgo - An excellent note and a fine shot to accompany it. This is an area of the world that is relatively unknown here on TE and I do so enjoy your shots.... they tempt me to follow in your footsteps! I'm not sure about a winter visit though although this scene is fabulous and it is hard to imagine that a summer version could compete with the dramatic snow covered landscape.

beautiful old church in the focal point of zour composition. Really stunning place.

The wide basin on this plateau, formed a beautiful lake from the snow melting every year, Malgo.
Looked it up on the web a 1900m alt. lake.
Impressive place, and you had chosen a wonderful POV to combuine the surrounding scenery.
Nice weekend, ciao,
PaulVDV (32743) 2014-04-27 9:52
Now here the winter certainly allows a much better view. In summer the clouds hang low and there was a haze over the lake.
When I was there the place was full of tourists. That's certainly your advantage of having traveled in April.
Good foreground with the zigzag of the wall.
I love this background of snowy mountain slopes rising up at the lake shores.
Best regards, Paul

An impressive historic structure by a placid lake in rugged terrain. I am appalled at the audacity of Soviet-era engineers and politicians who had no regard for the environment. I was glad to read that the deterioration was reversed. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
