Subho (well spotted that's my name too!) means auspicious and having good omen. 'Nobo' means new and 'borsho' means year. Today we Bengalis all across the globe celebrate the Bengali New Year's day. Along with Bengal many other states like Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Odisha, Tamil Nadu also celebrate their New Year today.
We begin our day by offering prayer to the Gods asking for their blessings for the New Year. Businessmen hold special prayers in their shops as this is the beginning of the accounting year for them too. But that's about it for the serious stuff the rest of the day and evening is for feasting and meeting family and friends.
Pictured here is a traditional Bengali meal prepared at my house few years ago on the occasion of the Bengali New Year.
On the main plate we have steamed rice and the starters (fried spinach with nuts, fried fish, fried potatoes, slices of egg plant dipped in a chickpea flour bater and fried and a mixed vegetable dish with smashed fish head)
In the main course anticlockwise in small containers we have dal(a dish with pulses and various vegetables), dry mutton curry, katla fish curry, sardine like fish cooked in mustard sauce.
After this we have the dessert items...green mango chutney, payesh (a sweet dish made of boiled milk, aromatic rice, sugar/date jaggery) and of course the last but not the least the famous bengali sweets.
This is not for a group but a single person :-)
A photo not of the best quality, but I thought it was fit to share a important piece of my culture.
Thanks for having a look.

Namaste Subho. Firstly Happy New Year. may the coming year bring you great fulfillment. The food looks delicious and I am sure it is, although if Ghee was used for all the frying, i would think that cholesterol might be a problem, but then New Year is not every day. By the way, the Indians in Malaysia and Singapore are not prone to jogging and exercise in general but they do eat fatty food- so diabetes and heart problems do abound. Good health to you Subho. regards. Klaudio.

I would no doubt enjoy this meel, which looks delicious, but I would prefer to be seated at a table rather than sitting on the floor. My European legs are not made for some aspects of Indian daily life :-). In any case this huge meel is nicely displayed in a very appetizing way. I wish you happy new year's celebrations.

interesting capture and description, it brought to mind my first ever encounter with Indian food. I could talk for hours about it!:) A whole table of delicious looking food, mouthwatering, yummy...and we were sooooo hungry! And hungry we went to bed because we couldn't eat a single piece of it, lol:))) It was so darn HOT!!! Shocking hot:)))
Well, it took quite some time to get used to it but what's funny now I always look for some Indian masala or curry powder whenever I travel to SE Asia to bring back home:))
Thanks for a good shot!

A wonderful picture of a celebratory feast, and one which has made me hungry. I am sitting in a hotel right now wondering what to eat, but somehow I doubt they will have anything as appealing as this. The texture and colors inside the table make a wonderful backdrop too.
A very happy new year to you and yours, may the year ahead bring happiness, peace and prosperity.

First of all a Very Happy New Year to you and your family.
I had seen a pic in today's newspaper in Delhi about the Bengali New Year.
The pic is showing a lot of items which seems to be very tasty. I have observed that Bengali's are fond of eating especially fish food since I had a Bengali friend who called the fish as JOLTORI !!!!
Thanks for sharing.

Dear Subho (or should I say, Auspicious)
That's a very interesting note to accompany your beautiful photo of this enticing food. I must confess that Indian food is not very kind to my digestive system, but I am intrigued by it's colour and use of spices. An excellent POV and a great use of the wide angle to give us an idea of the variety of this feast. I hope it was as delicious as it looks.

Very yummy, and many of these are my personal favorites. Can't eat all however, I am past the age. :)
