Photographer’s Note

Vietnamese ceramics have a long history stretching back to the ancient Hoa Binh and Bac Son cultures. Bat Trang itself became known as a famous ceramic-producing village as far back as the 14th century. This village lies on the Red River close to Hanoi and became a ceramics center because of the rich local deposits of white clay. Although these deposits are now exhausted, Bat Trang remains a potters' village, with at least 570 families making ceramics today. For centuries Bat Trang ceramics have been exported to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, and Europe and still are today. (http://www.thingsasian.com)
