Hello Henk. A very impressive Portrait. One keeps it in memory. The woman looks on the one hand into the camera, on the other hand in emptiness. A good shot and a outstanding Portrait study at the same time. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Bonjour Henk,
Especially the fact that you wrote "A Beautiful Face" instead of just "Old Woman" - I think your way is the way it should be done - as many photographers do made me open your image.
Wonderful portrait - both with the one of Cuba - with the story of her life drawn on her face, very impressive really.
Amicalement - Viviane
* PS: After having seen the WS I must say I like the wider one even better, the hat does it!

Hallo Henk,

Hi Henk,
Indeed a striking face ! I can't stop wondering how old this lady can be, have absolutely no idea about it. I prefer this close framing to the wider one, the impact is stronger here.

Hi Henk
As you know I'm more landscape than portrait but this lady's wrinkles and eyes are so impressive. I actually prefer your workshop version finding it more dynamic thanks to her expression and the way the her hat and clothes are so sharp, standing out really well against the bokeh. Here the bluriness of the hat and clothes distract rather for me. The colours in the WS are great too.

I love the workshop wider view. Not only the blurred light blue background is great but also the light in the entire picture is much better that the closed version. I also like how the dof works in that version. In the main one, the blurred hat and clothes are a bit disturbing. Very good.

Dag Henk,
John.

Hello Henk,
It is difficult to collect the expression of this woman. Its face is so wrinkled that we have the impression that it overflows of sadness.
These eyes are almost empty.
I prefer the close view. That give a better composition here.

Hi Henk,
Hard to forget face indeed. I think I prefer the WS, not because this would be too much. But I like the glance to the side and seeing the hat in complete. And the edge of the hat is a bit too blurred on this, it sort of picks attention as it's so close to those eyes.
Kari
dear Henk
how old is this woman?I could say maybe 120 years old,but is it possible?I've never seen such a face,I am really impressed!I think that her eyes and her mouth express the sadness, sure, she had not an easy life!I like this very closed portrait more than the WS,because I find it stronger.Don't you think it's strange to find beauty into the wrinkles of somebody else, when we hate them on ourself!Anyway,it's a great portrait!

Dear Henk! I am afraid she has seen things in her life that goes beyond our imagination and if we asked her she had to tell us about a world that is long forgotten. It also scares me a little and I am not sure how nice it is to become that old when all your friends, your husband or maybe even children have died away in the meantime and nobody really understands what you talk about, busy as we are running around with our mobile phones on our ear instead of listening to a wise woman and what she wants to tell us. You did a wonderful job, Henk, walking around with wide open eyes, finding her. Barbara. (PS. You were so so right yesterday, and I have deleted the stupid photo meanwhile. I didn't show a thing. I guess I become slowly boring.)

Hi Henk,
I totally agree with the other guys, what an impressive portrait. So much detail and somehow this picture has a special feeling. She`s branded by the life, I have never seen anything like that before. I think this version is better than the wider view, it has more expressiveness than the wider view which I think is great, too. Amazing portrait, very well done and many thanks for sharing.
Greetings
Mark
A photographic examination of the human condition through the study of faces is one of the great genres of photography. 1,000 words is insufficient worth for this great capture.
There is a mild mannered Thai school teacher in Bangkok named Manuel Librodo who is a genius with environmental portraiture. I suspect he will become world renowned for this type of photography. His reputation is growing.
You will enjoy his work:

I'm with the band who prefer the WS mainly, but prefer the direct stare of this one. I like the extra detail of her clothes in the WS and the oof background suits my taste better than the oof clothes here. However, both are remarkable, as you seem to have got right into the core of her. Well done

hello, henk
another great one, friend. beautiful indeed. both: her face with life inscriptions screemingly clear and the color work (the colors you have chosen to include and highlight). as to her eyes: do i see it correctly, it's the center of her eye that's blue, surrounded by white circle? i hope it's not a result of cataract though.

Dear Henk,
yes this is a beautiful face. Don't quite know what to say more as we are in the land of emotion here. I like them both actually. This one is more dramatic by being so close to all the details...I think she may have cataract...The workshop is lighter, whilst still very moving and with more graphism due to showing the whole hat. A whole life's story we can only imagine, thanks to your great work. I also love the very soft colors and the skin tone. Bravo!
Thanks for sharing this view

Hallo Henk,
a face full of life I think, I hope a life worth in her eyes. Just like the woman from Cuba very impressive and in excellent quality. The tight framing (thanks for the comparison) is much better in my eyes.
I would not swear but in my view her face expresses very well that she faces all challenges in life with confidence.

Beautiful face ?
Her face is as ugly as only a human face can be…
Her face is not a pleasant face…
Generations ago that face (maybe?) was a pretty face…
Nothing’s left from those years now…
That is - nothing but the grumpiness, and madness, and constant pretentions to the whole world around her…
Her eyes are either angry or indignant at your attempts of taking a snap of her…
This is not a joyful face…
This a face of someone who has no more zest for life, and has no more power to tell you: Get the phuk out of here with your camera, you big shot wimp…
It’s a sad face…
We see those faces constantly here and there…
Bend down and kiss on her hand would be a million times more useful than throwing her face into our faces
Oh, well…
Those are my thoughts about it…
………………….
Good photography, Henk… Not much of a reason for it, though …
Love

Hello Henk -
I really had a chuckle when I opened this image and compared it with the title. She reminds me of a turtle hiding in her shell. Excellent image everything is spot on the money. Well done!
Thank you for sharing.
I don't know which one is better as they are both very good. I think the WS image is a bit distracting with all of the extra room even though it is OOF. I think I prefer the main post it has something compelling about it. Maybe it is the humor or maybe how the Vietnam is etched in her face and expression. Both are well done. J

Hello Henk!
Wow, I saw a woman similar to this in Bangkok, such an appearance suggest that she could be perhaps hundreds of years old. Her eyes are so unusual; I don’t think I have ever seen them in such a shape or colour. I love her clothing, the chinstrap of the famous Vietnamese hat, the blue and maroon scarf (which happens to be the exact team colours of the local Brisbane Lions football team!), and the yellow sweater all add colour and texture variety to the image. The depth of this stare is extraordinary, it is rare in a portrait to make real eye contact but it is impossible to ignore here. You are right to draw comparisons with the Cuban woman you also photographed. Excellent image!

What a marvellous portrait, Henk. Yes, the color of her eyes stand out, but it's her face, strongly marked by wrinkles that make it so attractive for photography. And that mouth is amazing. Don't know which one I like more - the WS is also a very good one and her eyes looking at left is funny.

Major Meijer,
At this distance, it becomes intimate. Thank God she's wearing a large hat, otherwise you would be in her pupils... :-P)
I like these unique faces, and this one is fascinating, not only for her facial features, but also for her enigmatic staring and her eyes looking like a sun's eclipse.
A perfect tight shot, very carefully composed, but that might be instinctive for you. When you deal with elderly people, you know you have to make it fast, by respect and consideration. So your execution is flawless, despite the short time to get it in the can. I loooove to see this blurred hat edge.
Cheerios!

Wow...stunning portrait Henk. Perfectly exposed and composed. Honestly, the only thing I can even nitpick about (and I'm trying to look for things I don't like about the photo) is I would like to see the front of the woman's conical hat in sharper focus... Honestly though, this is a spectacular shot. Great eye picking out this woman as a subject also.

Henk,
it never can be to much when talking about getting close. The principal post looks close enough to me. The WS with the blurred background is nice to, but almost gives me the impression of being lost. I like to see the lady so close, close enough to see every wrinckle and the two senile arches in here eyes and even the pupils. Now that is being sharp! 24-70mm lens? Well, that is the next acquisition - next year!

Hi Henk,
She is indeed beautiful! The beauty is in the eyes and her eyes tell me that hse has a beautiful soul. I love tightly framed portraits like this one. I think that the intimacy of closeup portraits simply can't be beat. I do closely cropped portraits just for myself. The Denver Travel Guides don't have much use for these type of shots. They like the wider views better. If I was just shooting for myself, this would be my main type of people shots. My pow wow photos would have been a lot tighter also and the tightness would have eliminated some of the background clutter. I was specifically told to make the Pow Wow look more like an event. Your portrait is a world class beauty! Outstanding!

Hello Henk,
Interesting portrait for sure. I just wonder how old this lady is and what she has seen throughout her years. The portrait is very effective to show us facial features and also the almost no expression in her face. Indeed a beautiful portraits showing us what beauty means to many. The original version is moe interesting in my opinion because of the close up details we are able to see. Thw wider version help me see what the hut and head of the lady look like in perspective. Very good work Henk.

It is indeed a beautiful face; God only know how many stories could tell this face, and those eyes are an open window to the present and the past. This shot is pure poetry, thanks to the "model" but most of all thanks to your unique eye when the soul and spirit of the character need to be delivered to our eye. I'm not sure I could find a soundtrack for this picture; the best one could be a concert for violin and flute to enhance the softness and the beauty of this old lady..every single detail is just amazing, something to learn from.

Hi Henk,
This is indeed a beautiful expressive face. As with many of your portraits, what strikes me the most is the amazingly realistic skin texture and penetrating gaze.
I think I'm one of those who prefer the wider workshop view. She looks so tiny under that big hat and with her shifty gaze she looks as though she's been put there in the centre of the frame and can't wait to scuttle off.
