There is a "funny" story behind this shot.

Amazed at the capabilities of my 50 mm 1.8 lens, I kept on experimenting with my shots especially the DOF. For this one, I came really close to the "josticks" and took a shot of them in various angles. (I will post some of them in TL later). I was very happy with the results that I kept on shooting and shooting. For some unknown reason, this man strode in. He was so noisy. He, I guess, was a worker in this temple. He started to pull out the jostick, unmindful of my presence or of my "artistic" momentum. He seemed disagreeable to what I was doing. I was surprised (and a bit enraged).

But I took this incident as a positive opportunity. I walked back around 8 steps and took a picture of him instead. Not much time to compose, DOF still at 1.8... it created a really dark background because it was in front of the temple's balcony. Mind you, that picture was more of a retaliation to his "rudeness" (although I might have unconsciously violated some unwritten laws in photographing "josticks"). But I guess it turned out quite well.

I like the gray/red tones and dark background – they make this image even simplier... First I didn´t like the DOF – how the foreground/his hand are blurred – but now, I think your choice of DOF highlights nicely the expression on his face... Very well framed as usual.

Great with excellent background,
The posture of his face is a great strong element. The all colors are nice & well captured. The composition is perfect.
You did great,Manuel.

Nice clear shot, we can see him concentrating on his work and ignoring you. He stands out very well against this dark background.

Perhaps he was just doing what the man in my "temple attendant" shot was doing; the regular removal of the partially burned sticks to make room for more. Jos sales are the major driving force force in funding these places, so there needs to always be room for more to go in.

very nice shot, great DOF - I really like those blurred incenses in the foreground, great expression of the guy, good stuff.
this little 50mm is quite nice, isn't it? ;) I must also say that my 70-200 f/4 is nice too ;) it is getting expensive, this all photography ;)

The shallow DOF and dark background does well to accentuates the outline of the man. A smaller aperture would have brought more detail out in the foreground, but then as you said this was an opportunistic shot and it's pretty good considering. Well done

Excellent retaliation, Manny ;-) His ignorant or disagreeable expression actually enhances this scene quite a bit, and is well accentuated by your use of DOF. Also, aside from the josticks, the guy is basically the only colorful element in a mostly grayish color setting. Very good, I like the overall result a lot.

Faint green cyan color cast here, but the image is superb. The right joss stick across his ear is a shame, but the dark background is great for emphasizing texture, contrast & color in the main subject, even if you cant see his eyes. I also like the way the light on his shirt clearly separates him from the much darker tones in the background.

Nice image and nice note Manuel..
I haven't used a 50mm in ages, but remember them as great lenses.. They used to be the "normal" lens.. On you camera though it becomes a 75mm, great for portraits..

Sometimes great shots just happen and this is a good example. I really like the compo here, the man is well placed with the sticks in front of him. What attracted me to open the thumbnail, though, was the black background without any disturbances...brings out the subject even more. Well done!

Wonderful shot!! I really like his action and the DOF. The dark background looks great with a soften light to the man. Nice framing. Great shot!

Wonderful picture of this man in his meditation... So concentrate !
Very beautiful and colourful... DOF is perfect !
Congratulations !

retaliation can be a powerful tool;-)) and this time it proved so very true for you: superb shot! maybe you should not get too angry too often or you will make us so jealous... we already are sort of...;-)) lol
superb capture Manny! the light on his face is excellent and you did a perfect shot! you definitely want to make me spend money and buy this new lens, is that it?? you won i guess...lol

Manuel le roi du portrait naturel ! Encore une prise de vue qui laisse passer l'émotion et cela c'est formidable.
Bravo Manuel. Excellente composition (il fallait faire vite).
Manuel king of the natural portrait! Another recording which allows to pass the emotion and it it's formidable.
Bravo Manuel. Excellent composition (it was necessary to make fast).

The DOF is in fact excelent what together with the man makes a very goo photo!
It has a nice composition, and as you've said, the dark background is a very positive factor!

Superb composition and above all an impressive sharpness.
Excellent DOF also.
A very expressive portrait, congratulations Manuel !

A nice one Manny. So what is your compliment of lenses now? I see you've enjoyed the 1.8. Is it your current favorite?

THe DOF is amazing, but there are also great colors, nice angry expresion and excellent dark backround. This is a very WOW shot, MAnuel, very well done. Keep on experimenting andexp;oring you camera, and let us enjoy your results.

That's a great moment you captured here. Congratulations for your skills and your reaction because that's perfectly framed with the appropriate DOF.

Yes, I'm also impressed with your lens. Funny story, and another great shot. Out of pts.

Seems he has been really in a bad mood that day, Manny! :-) The light and dark background work perfectly to outline his character and to put impact on the atmosphere of your shot. Excellent capture!

This is amazing! He is so well-focused (in what he is doing, and with your camera), the black background and even the foreground is a very good contrast to the sticks and to the man.

Well I don't know if this shot was a retaliation because you've made him famous around the globe!!! ;-)

When you want to take vengeance over someone what do you do...give him presents I guess... eheheh.

Anyway this is a very nice daily life photo. I like the DOF centering all in the man and bluring all the rest as it concntrates the attention on him.

very good daily life picture Manny...very good results come out from your anger too than :)...we enjoy your good times and bad times..beautiful..

He is crystal clear, and it is a wonderful photo, his aggravation clear. I am in vietnam now......and I am tired of being charged 10 times the local rate...... for everything. If I buy nothing, I love Vietnam, if I try to fix something, or need something I am ready to leave after listenigtotheir stories, why I should pay so much...

I read your notes, my guess is he might love his privacy or he might have thought you're a newspaper journalist which might stir up his peacefull life (either in good or bad direction) with an article .
