great street photo, i like the detail init, and the man inside the shop in the shadows looking out at you. the two men outside seam to be interesting characters and i find myself wondering what is their home life like and waht they do for pleasure when away from work. The bright spark from the machine is perfect at expressing the power and effect it has on its victims. thank you for sharing

This is one those fine picture, mark, that captures the essence of a town. Hanoi's old town with it's guilds and entire streets devoted to one craft, is perfectly reprsented here - I love how the man is lit solely y his welding lamp. Cool, honest shot.
best,
Francis

Hi Mark,

What makes this for me, is the frame...making it look like a polaroid. I dont know if this is something you were trying to do? Quite original if so...

I like your cropping here, allowing me to observe the various tools, such as the ladder. This is a seemingly standard "shot", but I like the various hints of activity, such as the shadow of the "right hand man", which would not be there if the blowtorch was not active...

Such a wonderful shot, Mark, so simple-looking yet elaborate in what it does and doesn't include. A fine street shot and I can sense how those Hanoi nights may feel... love the inclusion of all these details from the welder to the ladder(s) and I also love the polaroid format, suits your composition perfectly and gives it a sense of immediacy.

I dunno, i must have somethng against flash photography, although you did not use your flash, his lamp gives the same bland lighting.. For this scene, I would go very low and closer to the worker, setting my exposure for the lamp light and hoping it retains enough light for some details the second plane character (a bit like your candlelit monks image in LP).

Also, I cannot dig any rythm in the background mess... I wonder about what made you take this shot this way precisely.
I'm going to Hanoi this summer, I've already bothered Francis with some information, I might ask you too to give me your feelings on the northern and central parts of Vietnam (from Hoi An to Hanoi).

Hi Mark, I like the very dry, square, documentary style of this image. As well as the zest of unreality created by the burnt-out flash of the heated metal in the middle of the picture. Therefore, my reaction to your image is 100% opposite to Luko's. I like the brown and neutred blue hues which brush out the image very aesthetically. I like the numerous and crisp details which tell so much about street life: the kettle, the ladder, the grid, the coconut broom, the two men watching, the sandal without a foot next to the sandal with a foot .... Well done indeed--amz
