During the Vietnam War, Phan Rang has been the air base for Australian Air Forces. The airport has a 10,000 ft runway at Longitude 108° 57' 0" East and Latitude 11° 37' 0" North. After the war, the area returns to its normal life. Phan Rang has highest livestock especially in sheep husbandry in Vietnam as shown in this photo.
Originally "Panduranga" from the Cham language, Phan Rang and its sister city of Thap Cham are located midway between Nha Trang and Phan Thiet, or 350km NorthEast of Ho Chi Minh City. The main attraction is a group of Cham towers called Po Klong Garai. The towers were originally built as Hindu temples in the 13th century. They are quite well preserved and offer a good insight into the construction techniques used by the Cham. The site contains several statues and carvings of Hindu gods including Shiva. The temples are perched on a hillside just to the west of Phan Rang, situated on the road from Phan Rang to Dalat.
There are three surviving structures enclosed by a rectangular perimeter wall: the main tower (kalan), a small gate tower to the east, and one of the smaller buildings of the type that was thought to be used to prepare offerings or store religious articles. They are in relatively good condition, particularly the main tower, whose corner-towers and flame-decorations are either intact or restored. There once was a tower housing a stele in the southwest corner, but that has disappeared.
The Chams continue to pay their respects to these towers, and a mustachioed linga representing Po Klong Garai is still seated in the center of the main temple, awaiting offerings. The Chams hold a major ceremony at this temple as a part of their Kate festival each year, which usually falls in early October.
Remarks: I am currently out of town “looking for” pictures for 2006 Calendar. Sorry that I have no time to write the note.

I love the undulating shape of the sheep as they work their way down the image. The atmosphere is superb! The light and the exposure perfect - a fantastic composition. This is you at your best Nhiem - a stunning image worthy of a master photographer - far from what you say about your qualifications to write about our work there are few people on TE who wouldn't value everything you have to say!

I'm with kevin is this one...
Great wave of sheeps, the light and mood is fantastic. I like the dust in the air, the colours and the POV.
jbweasle (9373) 2005-06-01 20:27
You couldn't have asked for better lighting - this is incredible. And I like the way the dust enhances the overall glow. Great composition with the snaking line of sheep. There's superb detail in those at the front and the line stretches back to the almost anonymous herder at the back. I wish I'd taken this pic - it's fantastic.
oochappan (22043) 2005-06-01 20:29
What a nice colormood very appropriate for this curving perspective to the man and all the dust and play of light, really like a romantic painting.
Very nicely done and very inspiring work
jinju (14265) 2005-06-01 20:30
This has a biblical feel to it. The sand is almost glowing and it gives a kind of supernatural feel. Its like a religious painting almost. Anyway, I thought it was highly postprocessed when I saw the thumbnail but that was just the sand. Great job, its a very nice photo.
annagrace (2467) 2005-06-01 21:09
This really looks like a painting. An amazing capture with fantastic lighting. Brilliant!

poulinp (4530) 2005-06-01 21:19
Je ne sais pas comment vous avez créé cette espèce d'aura flou, mais ça donne un effet surréaliste, comme si on vivait la scène en rêve. Superbe!
Homerhomer (4080) 2005-06-01 21:44
Everything is very special about this picture, the situation, the light, the processing and the final result.
The compositin is superb with the S shaped herd of sheeps leading us to the shepherd. The light, and its filtering created by the dust is very special, creates an unforgetable atmoshpere. The post processing is strong but good, borderline too strong but I am all for it as long as the final result is good because of it, having said that I think I would have prefered more details in the dark shadow area.
I just read your intro page and you say you don't critique because you are not qualified, that's fine, nobody will nor should force you to do so. Not many here will say that they are qualified, yours truly included, my opinion however is that by critiquing other works you learn as much about photography as you learn by receiving critiques from others, simply because analizing others work makes you think, and you can apply to your work. In addition you became a part of the very friendly and interesting community. Give it a try, you may like it.

kinginexile (2598) 2005-06-02 3:06
Really nice image, Nhiem, with plenty of atmosphere, and great light treatment, which draws subtle and different contours around what could be a busy dusty shot of an undescript sheep herd. I regret the frame that forces on me the post card format for a shot that has more than just postcard appeal.
Nice to witness a photographic personality at work in everyone of your contributions. Thanks!

fantastic pic.just love the atmosphere created by the light and dust in the pic.what attarcts me the most in the S path of the sheep in the frame and the man righr at the end of the herd.
blueaquan (157) 2013-04-10 10:54
As most have mentioned, the image is almost surreal. I was just thinking to myself if one is creative, even a simple daily life activity of a shepherd tethering his sheep can go on o make a wonderful Photograph.
By the way, the name "Panduranga" struck a chord with me, could you kindly check whether the source is from the Cham Language please, because in India, especially the state of Karnataka, "Panduranga" is Lord Vishnu, the principle Deity in Hindu Culture. Since you mentioned, that it was a Hindu Temple earlier, the chances are that the name may have referred to Lord Vishnu.
