Lovers of French colonial architecture are in for a treat in Hanoi. The old city, the former capital of French Indochina, is dotted with grandiose buildings that reflect both foreign and local influences - many lovingly restored and deserve to be looked at and thanks to Vietnam's meteoric economic rise.
The former French Quarter is the area south of Hoan Kiem Lake and it showcases the legacy of the European colonization of Vietnam. There are many fantastic colonial architecture of the early 20th century here. Famous attractions include the St Joseph Cathedral, Hoa Lo Prison, Hanoi Opera House, Sofitel Metropole Hotel, Former Residence of Paul Doumer the Governor General of Indochina, Cultural Palace and many museums, are the best known buildings of that period.
This is 1901 facade of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel, the old colonial building that bespeaks a time and place of this architecture and a typical representation of the French colonial style in Hanoi. This is Vietnam’s finest combination of history, atmosphere, luxury and is one of the country’s most elegant French colonial buildings. The original Metropole, has been restored to its former glory with just the right touches of modern design to make the hotel feel contemporary, but without disturbing the historical look and ambiance of the building.
Take a leisurely ride on these Vintage 1953 Citroen but bear the characteristic noise of the four-cylinder engine and experience the atmosphere of old charming Hanoi. It certainly worth for playing the old colonialist for one or two hours......

Vintage Cars, Vintage Architecture, Modern photograph.
The photograph has sharpness and clarity. The two cars are on the left hand side, just below the first green window on the left. The details of the three windows reveal tradition, heritage and class. The white walls, the smart sloping balustrade the short dressed green plants on pots, all add to the elegance of the picture.
The tone of the photograph and the texture of the colours are bright and vivid.
Thanks for sharing.

politically speaking this era was a bit tense, but the class and the style it left us is just outstanding. Your picture here cathes this spirit of the colonial era very well. It has nostalgia written all over it!

I love these old cars, and with those colonial windows as background the composition is complete, just as if we were some decades ago. Beautiful job!

J'aime beaucoup cette image vintage, un charme d'autrefois !
De plus, la couleur de ces CITROEN est étonnante, je ne crois jamais en avoir vu de semblable.
Très belle présentation.

You're capturing well this scene by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the architecture in French colonial times and vintage cars. It's interesting in white wall and elegant window of this hotel, too. Anyway, in the 18-20th century, many countries of Asia have been subject to the influence of the building, religion, and culture of a suzerain in the European or American countries. Although not all are denied, it is not a desirable tendency individually. A country must be always strong in order to prevent advance of a foreign country.
Have a nice day,

The colours of the cars are such an eye catching element to your capture here, especially against that beautiful white facade. Amazing that such a European looking scene is from Vietnam, I never knew about the proliferation of this style there. Beautiful shot, and a great note. My lesson learned today :)

The POV is superb with those pretty well framed windows in the background, the plants added touch of charm to this beautiful work.

Great postcard from Hanoi, Abmdsudi. The twin cars are a great attention grabber - bright and shiny and full of charm. The windows and facade you've set them against is lovely as well, with strong graphical elements and good clarity. Thanks for this one!

Hello dear Abmdsudi
Ahh yes, this is timeless. Those beautiful blue vintage cars really make the scene, composed in front of that beautiful colonial architecture. You spotted this scene well and composed it expertly. A simple yet timeless scene. Great shot.

I like these cars. It is funny because your picture could be taken anywhere else in France, not in Vietnam. Beautiful composition with this deep blue standing out the house and a perfect sharpness. A picture out of time.
shevchenko (19271) 2012-10-16 2:19
Good frame to a beautiful corner that combined east and west elements, where the potted orange trees are common in oriental orchard, the old cars and old windows are beautiful too, interesting composition, and informative note to introduce the historical building too, thanks for sharing.
Cricri (104511) 2012-10-16 11:05

I remember seeing this photo a few days ago and i loved it just as much then as i do now.
great work in showing just the 3 windows, and the bright blue cars really provide a wonderful contrasting element.
its simple but attractive, along with being a very different photo from this unique picturesque country.

a wonderful composition, elegant framing and great light management. Refined style and atmosphere permeate this lovely photo. I like very much the balance offered by the interaction of the elements of the composition. The cars with their lustrous colours brighten up the picture and look absolutely fascinating. A very complete view of the good old days my friend,I dont know but in those times they really had a good taste for the right combination of colorsas we can see here on the cars and the blinds of the windows.

I must admit I did not know much at all about Vietnam until quite recently - I have a brother living there so I have heard a little about Ho Chi Min City.
I had no idea that there was the French Quarter etc etc;
Your notes are extremely interesting.
Your photo is wonderful with the old cars - Amazing - the colours - clarity & Perspective all excellent work.
EstudioChispa (1898) 2013-10-23 9:12
This is such a surprising image to me, but it makes perfect historical sense.
I have to also say that your WS close-up of the 1953 Citroen is fabulous. I doubt that very many of these cars survive, even in France!
Great presentation, Abmdsudi; thanks for sharing!
