Photographer's Note

This is a close up view of a working barge widely used for trading in the vast Mekong delta. The bow is traditionally crafted this way with the prominent eyes painted brightly for good luck. The modern version of traditional wooden barges in Vietnam are all powered by diesel or gasoline engines. Today these modern wooden barges still preserve the features and charactaristics that is only unique to this area. The "eyes" is a trademark and pride of Mekong Delta.

I made this image because of the way its colors work as expression. It is accented by a subtle dominant vivid red with handsome and contrasty two watchful eyes in black and white. All of these colors, imho not ony add up to express a sense of happiness but also add life to Mekong Delta, where rivers and canals are lifeline to the people and economy who are so dependent on this vital natural source.

Additional pictures:
WS1: Another view of the "eye"
WS2: Sacks of rice being loaded onto a barge alongside a small canal on the delta. The rice field is in the background & observe a working mother and child on another barge.
