Chợ Lớn is a Chinese-influenced section of Ho Chi Minh City, former Saigon. It is the largest Chinatown in Vietnam. It lies on the west bank of the Saigon River, having Binh Tay Market as its central market.
The Vietnamese name Cholon literally means "big market".
In 1778, the Hoa, the Chinese minority of Vietnam, living had to take refuge in what is now Cholon because they were retaliated against by the Tây Sơn forces for their support of the Nguyễn Lords. In 1782, they were again massacred by the Tây Sơn and had to rebuild. They built high embankments against the flows of the river, and called their new settlement Tai-Ngon (meaning "embankment" in Cantonese).
Incorporated in 1879 as a city 11 km from Saigon. By the 1930s, it had expanded to the city limit of Saigon. On April 27, 1931, the two cities were merged to form Saigon-Cholon. In 1956, "Cholon" was dropped from the name and the city became known as Saigon.

I like your night time version of this typical street scene where the rickshaw drivers are waiting for customers. We can feel the rush and busy movement of the road with the blurred cars and motorbikes as they speed by. Nice use of the available ambient lighting from the street lights creating a warm glow.

Hello Erdem - I am surprised that this shot has attracted so little comment. It is full of atmosphere. I love the way the rickshaw driver is sitting and relaxing over his newspaper while all around him the traffic whirls madly past. Excellent shot under ambient and tricky light. Warm regards Rosemary

Merhaba Erdem bey,

I don't understand the comments in Turkish but both wanda and rosemary stressed the use of the available ambient light and I cannot but agree with them - night shots such as these have a certain atmosphere, a special mood that I like. your photo reminds me of a night shot series taken across South-East Asia that I saw last year in the Leica magazine - the photographer only took shots in artificial light conditions, which gave most photos a predominant greenish overcast.
maybe it's my monitor but I seem to find something of that atmosphere back in your image :)
I like the opposite forces at play here - the calm, quiet expression of the rickshaw driver and the blurred shapes whizzing by. I also like the horizontal distribution of the elements, from left to right.
have a good weekend!

Hi Erdem, Love how you have captured this scene, focusing on the Tuk tuk, and we then see the blur motion of the surrounding traffic and street scene. Well managed especially at night, love the drivers expression. Have a great Wednesday, Cheers Iain.

Interesting juxtaposition of the moving bike and the tuk tuk driver at rest. His amused expression completes the photo. I get the feeling that this was one of those quick instinctive photos, in which case you carried it off very well. Great shot anyway.

I will be in Saigon soon, and Cholon looks like the place to find the local feel, an snap some locals, there is a moment amongst the chaos here, cannot wait to dive in.
