Detail of phone system in the largely intact bomb-shelter basement of the Reunification Palace. The place looks and feels like a period movie set. It looks just like it did when Saigon fell to the North on April 30, 1975. The only thing obviously missing are the tank tracks on the front lawn. In the basement are several rooms with old telephone systems, light-up maps, field radio receivers and other remnants. It's just the sort of place you'd imagine the Vietnam war being conducted from if you're like me, too young to have an actual memory of it, and know it through the movies. It's a real experience to find yourself in a place so pivotal to the Vietnam war.
