Tau Hu arroyo: Vietnamese Venice

This is a picture taken of the stink and black Tau Hu arroyo from the Nhi Thien Duong Bridge in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City.

Walking along these canals you could experience odors emanating from polluted water that have made living condition of local residents worse.

Inside the city a hydrological network of five main arroyo systems acts as the natural water drainage: Nhieu Loc – Thi Nghe (9 km), Tau Hu – Kinh Doi – Kinh Te (19.5 km), Ben Nghe (5.9 km), Tan Hoa – Ong Buong – Lo Gom (7.2 km), and Tham Luong – Ben Cat – Vam Thuat (14 km). The total length of these canal systems is about 56 km with about 100 km from smaller tributaries. There are about 461,000 cubic meters of wastewater discharged into the receiving creek, which flow on to waterways in the residential area before eventually reaching the Saigon River. The demand from industries, businesses, and households surpassed the current supply distribution capacities. The water quality in river courses and underground sources is also highly degraded due to many sources of pollution.

*

This story is nothing news. The stink odor and the black water are the daily life. Not until recently, local authorities have been successfully planned and enforced the removal of thousand of residences within this polluted area to several new apartment complexes in Binh Chanh District as the first steps toward a better condition for people and a proper wastewater treatment.

I wish the camera could capture the real odors so my picture better describes the real threatened life of local people here > 24 hours a day > 7 days a week > non-stop... While Italy has its Venice, Vietnam get this system of arroyos. The only difference is time: one has been built since centuries, another is in the plan.

I wish you could capture the odors...
I wish we could capture the smells and share them too...
Thanks...

Hi Thanh,
It's hard to imagine that people can live there and sometimes maybe be happy too. It's hard to say that you made a "nice" picture though. It's a good shot of the tough reality.

HI
Belle image avec un joli cadrage en diagonale, qui permet ce contraste entre les maisons et la rivière tout en gardant les reflets

Great colours and shapes - I like the curved diagonal where the water meets the shantytown.

Cheers, Robin

Hi Mr Thanh
A shot with colorful and reflection is very well, very nice as well as meaningful for the daily life in VN. Good note. Thanks for sharing

And we are pleased that the camera doesn't capture the odour too! Very interesting notes as well. Expensive waterfront properties, well captured Thanh, colours and details are good. Well done.

Interesting perspective on this area. In terms of aesthetics, the blend of colors is quite nice. The slice of the river is also well placed. The real achievement is your useful note. Hopefully conditions will improve.

I WAS HERE IN APRIL 2005. I can took many pictures of this area. Thank you for history and background
