after a day trip to Cat Ba National Park we returned to a small city on Cat Ba Island. Cat Ba Island is the biggest island in famous Halong Bay, which due to its rock formations on the water is on the UNESCO list of the world heritage.
and there was a bunch of kids at the pier wandering around and trying to sell postcards and other stuff to tourists. And this boy was really nasty, such a pushy kid...
-hello, buy a postcard!
-no, thank you
-buy a postcard!
-no, thanks, I don't want to buy any postcards
-but you HAVE TO buy!
-no, I don't have to buy. and I don't like postcards
-so why are you taking pictures?
-it is different.
-no, it is the same. buy postcards from me.
-no, I don't want to buy. I don't have money.
-so why do you travel? how did you buy an airticket to Vietnam if you don't have money... and how did you get your camera if you don't have money?
-oh man! I don't want your postcards....!

and so on for at least half an hour...

I was really tired of him, I was just waiting for the sunset at the pier, taking pictures around. and later this kid started disturbing me, waving his hand in front of my camera, still saying that I have to buy his postcards. I said, ok, you don't want me to take pictures of the sunset, so I'll be taking pictures of you.

and that's the one I like te most - he and his postcards

in fact I was pretending I want to take pictures of the sunset.. I was there for those kids...

Original shot, PS - sharpening after resizing, auto-levels, contrast a bit.

It seems this "annoyance" goes hand in hand wherever there are tourists but this postcard boy, and your story, give us a glimpse of life "behind" the cards.I guess it is just part of treking the earth. The composition is interesting with cards accompanied by an eye and a smile.

Ha, a funny note and a good photo! Suprised you met such persistant touts on Cat Ba Island... I went there about 2 years ago, and I thought they were quite relaxed. I suspect sometimes they get a bit bored and occasionally pick a tourist and just keep pestering them until they do buy something. Anyway, from memory I got a hotel room on the 10th floor or something for $4 with a balcony and view over Halong Bay. OK I spent about $20 on tours through him during the say, but it was still bloody cheap!

It's a really good photo, it avoids the danger and temption of the 'cute id' photo and shows things in a new way...and it also shows something of life, how these kids earn a living, the impact of tourism. Your story is excellent too. Well done, hope I can do as well!

Very, very nice pictyre Maciej. I love your composition here. He looks so smart..So you see , he was not a pain after all, he gave you the opportunity to take a great shot..

sometimes those are the best photos...

Nice candid shot. Totally a new way of shooting a portrait.:) Your Vietnam shots rae amazing. This one is no exception. I wonder how it would be if you include more hands.

Worth putting up with some hassle to get an interesting shot like this. Well done.

A very intersting pic wich contains a lot of story's. Very well done (why did yoy not crop the unuseful detail on the left?)

very lively pic, looks like he will be hassling me until I give him two points...ok you got them... ;-)

Seriously the way you framed him is top notch, with just his malicious eye at the crossing of the cards...I wonder how many shots you had before you got this one...this is so dynamic you definitely can't get this at first click...

One of the very good things is that the map gives some context info, pointing the location of where that pic was shot.

What does he say? ...he wants two more points?...c'mon...

It's a great shot with a great story. It happened to me also in the forbidden city (Beijing), but I couldn't stuck the camera at their faces. The fact he's hiding behind his postcards makes this photo very very special. Well done.

brilliant! i like this picture a lot. i think this is the best damn picture on trek earth ever!

I really like your work Maciej. They are so full of life. This one is no different though I would have liked to see a little more of the visible eye maybe.
