This is one of the bad scans taken on the shore of Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi during my last trip with film cameras. It was my ashamed and wasteful trip, and the incorrect processing by a labs in Hanoi became a great contribution to my photographic failure.
Returning to Hanoi 8 months later, I spent 3 days hunting for a relaxed atmosphere as replacement but never found such scene.
Hoan Kiem Lake locates right in the middle of the city of Hanoi, or locally known as bờ hồ (the shore of the lake). It is more than the place for morning exercises, leisure and recreation activities. It is the heart and the beats of the city.
Legends said that way back in the mid-15th century on the occasion of Emperor Lý Thái Tổ's (Lê Lợi) relaxation trip by sampan on the lake after the victory over the Ming aggressors, a Golden Tortoise emerged to request him to return the holy sword given to him by the Sky God to protect the country against the enemy. From that, the lake is called as Hồ Hoàn Kiếm — the Lake of the Restored Sword.
This scenic lake is nicely bordered by aged trees. In the extreme north is an islet accessible by a wooden bridge painted red namely Thê Húc. The small temple of Ngọc Sơn of 19th century is dedicated to General Trần Hưng Đạo, a hero against the Mongolians in the 13th. In the middle of the lake is the Tortoise Tower (Tháp Rùa) considered as the contemporary symbol of Hanoi.

Hi Thanh. I think that you are being too harsh with yourself. This photo might be lacking in your eyes, but I find it a sensitive and well composed piece. The positioning of these two ladies is excellent for it makes us almost hear what they are saying to each other. The delicate leaves create a soft curtain around them and the little temple makes the whole thing serene. I like it and I too have lovely memories of this place.
Besides the sharpness and contrast of a scan in comparison against a digital shot, your composition and recorded atmosphere have nothing wrong to be ashamed of.
Still don't want it? — just change the photographer's name into my name: I am happy to take both the blame and the shame for you ;o)
Cheers!
Hi Thanh!
A scenic lake is a perfect place for someone to stay and recollect! The ladies in your image are perfectly framed. Really a moody atmosphere. It's a good photo, I mean it transmits a lot.
Thank you for sharing and having this nice "talk" about the past (be it of the women in your image or of the lake - I enjoyed the legends).
Best wishes!
Olá Thanh
