[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The next of my portraits of the black H'mong people of Sapa. This lady and many others were selling their hand made crafts at a waterfall on one of our walks through the countryside. The H'mong and Dzao people are the largest ethnic groups in the area. It is nicer to visist Sapa during the week as the weekends can get very crowded, although there is a nice big market on Saturdays.
On a technical point I should have stepped back a little more to include more of the baby in the shot as it would have made for a better image. Let me know what you think.

Yes, stepping back would have helped and I think the child's face is overexposed. Still, good shot.

Hi Wanda,
It's a great portrait, very impressive and wisely composed. You are right about being better including more of the baby, but perhaps even more important than that, he shouldn't be so bright. But those are minor details that don't stop me liking it a lot.
Regards, José.

Hi Wanda.
An excelent portrait, a very good work on B&W, i like this composition that show us how these women carryes their children. Congratulations for this nice picture.
Angel.

le noir et blanc donne toute la justesse a cette photo et l'émotion en resort

Another good BW portrait that shows the typical spirit of H'mong minority. I know you must have tried all your best to shoot this lady as it's quite hard to have good position for this kind of shot, decisive moment; people there dont like being taken photo (except you give some $$$). Then few steps back would be great for more details of the child and you could get the focus on both mom and child. Personally, in this case I would lower the POV a bit to cut off little top scarf of the lady then have more of the baby.
I tried a workshop, please check if it's useful.
Regards
Tan

This is another beautiful portrait, even if I think is looks a bit overexposed on the baby. This time you have the right sharpening and I can not see the problem mentioned on your previous post. Well done.
Antonio

Hi Wanda,

Like this portrait of yours. Yes on the baby's face. It is slightly missing and also overexposed.

Do not see your exif data. What was your fstop? You could have got a better bokeh here. Right now, my attention still wanders to the man and the house in the background.

Cheers,
Guru

PS: Still hunting for the corridor photo. Will post it soon.

Hi Wanda,
well blurred background and good sharpness. Black and white are impressive but Ithink this could be also good in colour. I have a bit a problem with the composition. For a portrait there is too much behind her face, and for a shot together with the child on her back there is not enough from the child visible and less quality on that part. But I think that are your own thoughts reading your note.

Hi Wanda,
Beautiful and suggestive portrait. Excellent timing and superb composition. Good choice the B&W. Refined and full of life shot. Congratolations. Have a nice day, thank you
George

hello Wanda
just the child is OE, framing can't be closer, nice portrait, perfect background, each subject is at the right place, interesting composition *****

Hi Wanda, beautiful portrait, with a good black and white and good composition.
the focus on the mother with all the rest blurred was a good idea.
thanks, ciao

Hi Wanda,
Nice portrait of the Hmong lady, a very interesting tribe displaced from their motherland and now spread all over South Esat Asia. The baby is a bit OE but nice work otherwise.

Great glance, I like the expression of the face of the woman. But you've cut the head of the baby.
Nice shot,
Cheers, Jean-Claude

Hi Wanda!

Amazing "portrait", great framing and composition, perfect "colaboration" with your "model". The b&w is an excellent choice and gives a "retro" feeling. Congratulations!

Hello Wanda,
well captured and framed portrait shot of this Black H'mong woman and her baby. The b/w version is suitable here and the contrast is good, however a bit too bright on the child. Maybe with one more step back, you'd have had the complete scarf on woman's head and more of the child. But how stormboy said, in such a situation, you don't have many time to adjust your pov.
Well done and have a nice weekend!
Attila

Hi Wanda, lovely B&W portrait with great expression, with splendid family composition, very well done, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio
