Halong Bay
HaLong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Quang Ninh province, in the Gulf of Tonkin, Vietnam. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. It includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Because of their precipitous nature, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by a human presence. The site's outstanding scenic beauty is complemented by its great biological interest.

What do people here? We all get on a boat and make a tour through the islands which are spreaded all around and it looks like sailing through a big maze with high mountains with tiny ships in front of them.
With other words....it's beautiful down there.

Okay....at least a landscape ;-)

Hello Henk,
Very beautiful photograph breathing the calm one and peace.
The composition is perfect.
Thank you for the explanatory note.

Marc

A lonely boat and a lovely picture. This is just a play of words as your photo is much more than that. It is wonderful.
António

A nice composition despite the weather looks not too friendly, i have visited this wonderful place once but unfortunately in the very bad weather. I like to see the small boat on fg on this picture, without that it would be lack of interest. Still a well presented picture Henk, thanks.

Hoi Henk,
Prachtig foto werk Henk!

Hi Henk. This is one place Sue (my wife) wants to go, and I won’t moan if we go ;-). This photo only makes it more attractive. Well captured, the boat in the foregrounds add to the depth and gives a sense of place. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

dear Henk
OK,a landscape, but, what a landscape! One of the most beautiful in the world, and you show it very well!I like the morning soft light, and the different layers of grey mounts with the lonely boat in the foreground!I imagine that it was not so easy to isolate only one boat,it depends maybe of the time!Anyway,it's a wonderful picture!
Regards.

Hello Henk,

A beautiful landscape. The combination of soft colours and silhouettes on the background create a special effect on this image. The little boat is a nice addition to the foreground as it add a speckle of colour to this vast greyish view. Beautiful work.

Hi Henk
Very nice picture. Good composition and beatifull landscape. Great!
Have you nice week!

Hi Henk.

Excellent picture. The depth and that mountains in the background are excellent.

My compliments!

Hello today's neighbor !
You perfectly used the average weather here, what a light !
Your compo is very pleasant, with great use of the misty DOF and perfect place for the boat.
Nice job, a great landscape :o)
Regards,
JB.

Hi Henk,
I don't mind a landscape from time to time ;-)
A very subtle one based on the shades and contrasts to deliver the depth, even though no strong color (red for example, or much worse, yellow...) pops out it has strong visual impact.
Have a nice day JY

Fijn weekend,
Bert

Well, I am not so much for the landscapes generally, but this one is special ! not only because it reminds me of happy moments there, but I admire the colours and the light conditions : magical ! The little boat too is adding a lot...
Gefeliciteerd !
Waiting for your other portraits,
Greetings,
Cath.

Hi Henk,

Groeten! Dennis

Love the muted colours Henk. Beautifully composed as one would expect.

Best regards, Roberto

Hi Henk,
I don't think you can really complain about the light conditions for this one! The soft, misty light is ideal for bringing out the delicate subdued tones of the receding planes of the mountains, while the single boat works very well as a focal point and conveys a sense of scale.
I particularly like the elegance and simplicity of this composition which does a good job of conveying the grandeur and beauty of the place.
John

Hi Henk,
Famous place and for a good reason. I've always liked mountaing contours overlapping each other with further ones dissappearing to background. Steep cliffs are impressive and the bout good main focal point. Hazy weather seems to suit well on this dreamlike scene.
Kari

hello henk,

As usual, the sky ins very special in this area... Something like never ever really clear. these islands are a dream, not only in James bond films...

have agreat day!

Henk, Awesome isolation of the boat in theis dramatic terrain, fantastic shot.

In this photograph the framing is particularly good. You revealed the bump in backgrouond in the concave form of the foreground. The colours are very soft and give a very good environment to the litte boat on the right.

hello Henk,
I firmly believe that only a true master can handle different aspects of this chosen craft, and for photographs the challenge is landscapes v. portraits. what can I say - your landscapes are as great as your portraits :) beautiful calm and serene scene, I like a lot the layers of rocks disappearing in the mist, with the tiny little blue accent in the foreground. excellent work, my compliments.

Hallo Henk,

Bedankt!

Prettig weekend,
John.

Hi Henk, a spectacular place and quite serene and at the same time mystical looking shot despite the lack of good light. I think you could darken the front cliff completely to have just a silhouette of it.

O this is really beautiful. So minimalistic in the elements, and for the same reason with such a great impact. Almost an abstract. To me, this is one of the photos that could be with or without colour and still remain wonderful.
Fantastic.

Hallo Henk,
the lines of the hills as silhouettes in the haze are full of mood, well added by the boat on the water. Just a landscape but a pretty one well captured.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Henk,
The sky complements the sea. Nice contrast of the blue background hill & the green forested island. Boat & fishermen a significant focal point for this shot. Lovely soft finishing & colors. I'm glad to see this landscape because it's taken by this particular lens. Today I came home from the camera shop with this same lens. For now I'm using a Rebel XT (350d) body but it feels awkward & disproportional with the lens. Regards. Latiff.

Hi Henk,

This place seems to be eternally under mist and fog. I guess it's a good thing for moody landscape photographer.

The 3 distinct levels of mountains, photogenically overlapping each other, is gorgeous. The successive shapes tone down progressively to create a very peaceful mood. The boat, delicate and iconic, is ideally placed in the composition. Low horizon rules!

Have a good weekend!

Well seen and great result for this one, well the fog to draw the silhouettes of these mountains, perfect detail with the lonely boat to add a focal point on yout composition.

I remember Halong Bay. The karsts are so photogenic, and larger than you imagine, so the boat you have in the frame is a very important feature of the image. You had a strange, almost eerie light that gives lots of atmosphere to the image. Well done

hi Henk

Nice to visit your gallery. Somehow I feel that your style of photography has an air of country and candid portrait. This example of superb shot shows me the single fishing boat amidst the HaLong Bay beauty. Although the haze and gloomy sky is giving a low contrast here, the mood sets off a different atmosphere to your capture, emphasizing on your title of lonely.

Many have come here for this WH Heritage Site and I hope I will one of them soon. I can imagine this place at different times of day under variation of light conditions.

Great work, Henk.

Hello Henk,

I really like this, fondly reminding me of similar Phang Nga Bay in Southern Thailand. Limestone can be whittled into some of the most interesting shapes and textures, and are a pleasure to photograph at any time of day. As you have said, you do not have many landscape shots to share from your trip due to poor weather (I was the same in SE Asia), but this one is pretty good. The lone boat makes it all the more special, showing the enormity of the diverse landscape. I recall that the locals thought this was the place dragons lived in ancient mystical times, obviously a special connection to this area. Well done Henk, sure there will be lots more to come ;)~!

Matt

Hello Henk,

J'aime.

Ah, a landscape! ;) Great game of limited colors and successive layers of depth and light. The tiny boat is essential to anchor the shot and to give scale to the magnitude of the place. So simple, yet so effective. Like it a lot.

OK, I see what you meant with the grey light. It is a horrible light and yet there are some people that still can extract mild out of stones. You did it here and ended up with a reasonable good landscape that got a special sense of depth with that lonely boat in the right corner.
Peter

Dag, Henk.

I bet you have more surprising landscapes, Henk. How could you say "bad news"? This is a magnificent image. As I already said before: no matter if the weather is bad - you will allways make amazing captures. The 'dragon' silhouettes and the boat make a dreamy view.

Hi Henk,
You are a great photographer not only because of your outstanding technical and artistic skills, but also because you adapt very well to your changing environment and you have the experience to be flexible as to your subject matter and you can take great photos in any lighting situation. That is the main ingredient as to what separates the pros from the advanced amateurs (in my opinion). I know that you are not a full-time professional but you shoot like one. Everything is flawless in your image and the beauty and composition speaks for itself. Outstanding!
Stan

Hi Henk,
not been around for a while and I missed your last 3 posts. Looking at this picture I've been sorrounded by an incredibly beautiful feeling of peace and tranquillity..what more could I ask after a long afternoon spent looking after my two almost 2 years old twins!! A good glass of red wine while looking at this stunning scenario and in my ipod Mascagni is playing his masterpiece, the Cavalleria Rusticana. I'm not too sure if this is the best soundtrack for this shot, I'll have o try different soundtracks before I call the shot but in the meantime I wish to say thank you because I'm enjoying the whole lot..a lot!
Thanks Henk,

Igor

Hello Henk,
Just a fantastic landscape and a great picture!

Hi Henk,
Yeah, at least a landscape.
How long more do people live after seeing such places, i wonder. Of course it is also a matter of time and funds.
But how much a photographer who has shared this timing and composition can be admired, we already see here.
I see more mathematics than a landscape here...
Cheers,
Deniz

Hello Henk -

A landscape hooray! This is one of those classic N. Vietnam/S. China scenes. The placement of the boat is not only perfect for the scene but also provides some scale for the image. The hazy atmosphere seems to always be present in these scenes but without the sun this one seems to be lacking. I know you said the weather was not very good on this trip but at least you tried and some what succeeded.

Thank you for sharing.

John

I'm always pleased when one of my images resembles (not due to copying) one by a fine photographer such as yourself. And it's not surprising there's a resemblance, because, well, high hills and small boats are what one sees in Halong Bay, one of the most beautiful places in the world in my opinion. It looks like the haze was pretty heavy when you were there, but you used the light conditions really well, Henk. Regards, Ken.

Excellent cadrage

Hello Henk
I do not know which picture to choose from your gallery & that being done, what to say. Your landscapes and portraits are both class apart. While your portraits are closeups with neat & deft crops, your landscapes are distant, allowing the viewer to absorb as much as possible. You're the king of colours, Velvia being your favourite & justifiably so, but here is a landscape shorn of colours & stripped to the virtual duochrome with layers and geometry taking the front seat. Amazing, these layers, changing shades ever so subtely. The boat, the sign of life amidst the dead rocks, so very important is so well placed.
With Regards
Angshu

As easy as you make it seems, this is a very hard shot to get right, and you have acomplish it very elegantly.
Cheers,
E
