Another dawn view from the balcony of the Queen Hotel in Sapa, an old French colonial hilltown in north west Vietnam, close to the Chinese border. The distortion is a result of the 28 mm lens. The central buildings are perpendicular.
Taken about 5.30 am to 6 am, before the sun had risen, so the fg is still in darkness, even though the higher peaks are in sunlight. Sapa is about 5,500 feet above sealevel, & Mt Fansipan on the left is over 9,000 feet high.

The picture is a little bit dark, isn't it?
Anyway, the colours of the sky are impressive and the compo with the buildings and the mountains is great.
Galmeida (12559) 2006-03-13 3:36
Fantastic light contrast and a impressive and near surrealist atmosphere and moment. Excelent colors, beautiful sky, nice enquadrement view and a splendid composition. Very well seen, done and composed. Congratulations and have a nice week.

Great time of day, and light, you have for this. What a great view you have, this place looks like a must on any trip to Vietnam.
aloyho (6798) 2006-03-13 3:48
This is a fantastic view with the mountains and the settlement cutting at an angle and the white buildings breaking the dark areas at good intervals. The clouds did spring some surprises. Wonderful shot!! Have a pleasant week ahead.

Hi Chris, that village is really built on the shore of the valley!
excellent colours and nice sunset light.
PixelTerror (0) 2006-03-13 4:09
Good you woke up early, I'm a bit amazed to see this place so hilly but on one side I'm quite an ignorant about Vietnam and on the other side I won't certainly complain for the presence of mountains. A nice view well enhanced by the dawn lovely coloring of the clouds.
Have a nice day,
Gerrit (48220) 2006-03-13 4:27
Nice view with curious sky and fine mountainscenery.
Thanks and regards, Gerrit

Beautiful light and great contrast on this lovely scene, Chris. Especially the light on the white buildings is a great effect. The dawn sky tops it all off beautifully. Well done.
pastadog (13111) 2006-03-13 4:29
Hi Chris, you superbly took advantage of your staying at that room, great you woke up early to shoot this beautiful dawn over town!, the reddish clouds are very special, to me the highlight of the nice compo, thanks! Daniel

Amazing picture. I like the colours and the depth with that strange city at the foreground and the mountains in the background. Very good sharpness too.
jhm (139952) 2006-03-13 6:07
This is not usual for you these picture, the sky and clouds are a little bit unnatural, also the foreground is dark, maybe better tomorrow, sorry Chris for my comment.

It is interesting to see the colonial Western architecture in the heart of SE Asia!
I like this composition of the rugged landscape, with the darkness of the night not yet quite gone... The burning red clouds add extra interest value
Cormac (26563) 2006-03-13 10:46
Wow! The colour and contrast in this photo is really eye-popping! Everything seems so well defined and sharp, and the colours so vivid that it's like being there. Great timing, and a great sense of mood too. The darker tone of the shot is one of the things that makes it more attractive (to my eye at least) because it shows the colours better, and gives a good feel of the time of day. Excellent shot!
ndb1958 (9289) 2006-03-13 11:18
Nice shot, Chris. The colours of the sky are warm and beautiful. Nice composition. Nino
nwoehnl (122) 2006-03-13 15:24
A nice early morning impression, Chris - I like the moody light and the red tinting of the clouds. The buildings offset against the mountain range make for an interesting photo.
jrj (34841) 2006-03-13 15:51
Another very interesting place to study in this one chris. Not least what a strange red setting on the clouds up there. Fantastic landscape and details. TFS
donluicu (24724) 2006-03-13 16:13
this is an unreal picture!!
It could be a manga, with unreal buildings and colors..
Fixfocus (9385) 2006-03-13 16:32
It was worth it to get up early, the light is really great.Superb contrast between the village and the mountainscape.Colors are splendid too.Congratulations!

Bien vu , joli ciel et belle composition , etrange cette ville nichée sur la montagne , la vue des balcons doit etre belle . Les nuages rouges sont impressionnant .
pilpel-adom (3018) 2006-03-13 18:18
Amazing scene, Chris! The floating pinkish clouds, the BG highlighted peaks and the FG darkened (rundown??) buildings are such contrastic, and yet part of the nature, with the tropicla forest at the right can remind us...well composed! Wished the quality of the picture scanning was best...
Kenny10pin (19301) 2006-03-13 20:39
very nice picture, i like, the colours are really great and the the height from which you took this is great
singuanti (15250) 2006-03-13 22:05
Hi Chris. The scan quality might be a tad sub-par from your norm but the colors sure make up for it. The sharpness is spot on in this one. tfs Chris!
PJE (20758) 2006-03-13 23:35
Well Chris this place looks very interesting. The fact that you caught it before sunrise makes the lighting very interesting to the viewer. Very well done!
coco (30439) 2006-03-14 10:37
Good composition and splendid colours here. The light is the cause and gives an special and, even, magical touch.
capthaddock (28790) 2006-03-14 10:38
Hi Chris - this makes a nice contrast with the more common beachside images we see from VN, the highrise buildings also look so out of place in a wild mountainous setting, excellent timing with the light & clouds.
marieaude (1196) 2006-03-14 11:35
Strange feeling in this photo with dark and light together. I think it was dificult to realise maybe, well I see you used the tripod. I like it, thanks
tcht (7565) 2006-03-14 15:15
Perhaps a little bit soft but it still works very well. The clouds (their colors) look a bit unrealistic...due to sunrise? but the PoV is good here. Well taken shot. TFS.
fabio_ts (13694) 2006-03-15 3:49
Really evocative view Chris.. the coloured clouds makes the sky very dramatic and add great atmosphere to the image, compliments!!
have a nice day,
hdl (6995) 2006-03-15 7:39
It looks both grimm and colourful.
Galeota (10338) 2006-03-15 9:05
Hello Chris, the atmosphere is so strange here. The harsh contrast, the light filtering here and there showing parts of facades which look like ruins, the majestic background. View of Sa Pa that differs from the usual countryside photographs. Well done.
sarju (5324) 2006-03-16 20:38
For me, it is the beautiful colours on the clouds, sky and the mountains that make this photo special.
and the setting of the town also looks splendid
thanks for this wonderful share
regards ... sarju

après une petite pause de 2 semaines de TE, je suis très content de découvrir tes nouveaux chefs-d'oeuvres, que de jolies couleurs et j'aime bien le fort contraste des zones ombragées, très beau travail,
