In the village of Ta Phin, north Vietnam you can meet people from Red Dzao hill tribe minority. We were invited to "have a smoke" with this old lady at her "house" ... so we tried :) It was actually a very dark place to take photos with a fireplace in the corner, no sunlight inside. The room for the whole family as well as for the storage of rice ...
The Red Dzao is one of the ethnic groups that live in the region. They are called Red Dzao because they always use red to decorate the clothes they wear. There are two curiosities about this tribe. The first is that you can know how rich a woman is by the size of her hat. the other is that the local canon of beauty says women have to shave their hair and eyebrows.

Il y a une belle atmosphère avec la fumée qui est expirée par la femme. Cadrage millimétré et bon éclairage (flash?)
Toutes mes félicitations.
Je lamets dans ma sélection (photos dont j'aimerai être l'auteur)

Hi Zuzana, You did well to get such a sharp image in such a dark place. Composition works well, with her face well placed and a nice diagonal created by the bamboo and smoke. Timing was good too, catching an evocative expression. Cheers, steve

Hello Zuzana - A very strong portrait with excellent colour saturation and clean focus. I like the way the red and white detail in the woman's clothing stands out against the black background. Good detail on the skin. Well balanced compostion. Excellent. Best regards Rosemary

Congratulations on such a detailed, fine shot. Nice that both hands can be seen, and the lovely smoke gives it a great atmosphere. The reds and black give real punch to this picture.

Great portrait, Zuzana. It's always a pity to have to use a flash in such situations, but here the damage seems to be minimal. I hope the flash didn't destroy the atmosphere of hospitality, maybe the people of Sapa are used to it by now?
Cheers & thanks for sharing.

What an incisive portrait of the Red Dazoan lady! Isolating her face and hand with the dark field, with just the smoke as a subtle highlight makes it a truly memorable photo. There is one other aspect that is a master touch. and that is the inadvertent (I think) technique of placing one of her eyes (here her right) on the vertical centerline. I wrote about this principle in two of my books, and gave a summary in the note accompanying one of my photos, “The Old Rabbi” shot at Chopin Airport in Warsaw, and referred to another photo, “The Old Rabbi”.
Warm regards and have a good week, Zuzana. You are very talented photographer. Do you also paint?

A very wonderful and unique portrait indeed. You managed very very well in what I am sure was a very dark environment. I have never seen a pipe like that before. Interesting notes about shaving the hair, which is what I suspected was the case when I saw the Red Dzao in Sapa. A wonderful addition to your gallery. Fine work, warm regards,

Old people are good subjects for photography. An impressive portrait shot in which we can see every detail of the face. Good sharpness and DOF management. Well done!
Have a nice weekend,

I love this portrait because of the genuine expression on the woman's face, a balanced compositions, limited (black-red) color spectrum and liveness that is accentuated with smoke.
Keep it going.

You did very well in the dark conditions to capture his fine portrait. Great framing and nice in action daily life shot. Nice with the smoke, and I like all the details that we can see on her traditional clothing.

bellissima questa immagine, sia per l'espressione catturata che per la resa cromatica.
Tecnicamente molto ben lavorata.

I've just found your work on TE, and love it! This is a very striking photograph, with lovely rich, saturated tones, excellent framing, and a perfect moment caught, the expression as she exhales! You say the lighting conditions were difficult, but you've obviously overcome the problems successfully: I'd like to know how. I don't think you've used flash (although now I look again, the face and catchlights in the eyes suggest perhaps you did); I don't expect you used a tripod in these circumstances...
Great work however.
