| From the balcony of Emperor Khai Dinh's Mausoleum, on the slope of Chau Chu Mountain 10km south of Huê. Khai Dinh was the second last Emperor of Viêt Nam, and died in 1925. His mausoleum, started in 1920 and lasting 11 years, represents a strong contrast in comparison with those of his predecessors. Occupying a much smaller surface, this monument stands out by its massive size, a result of the interminglement of European and Asian architecture styles. The interior decoration is even more spectacular, with elaborate glass and porcelaine densely assembled in mosaics, qualified as kitsch by some... |
