Photographer's Note

This is part of the exterior wall of the Shirdor madrasah at the Registan square in Samarkand.
The pattern is the following: Two angles embrace a square. The angles are filled with two different inscriptions in qufic style: 'subhanallah'- Glorify Allah the opposite angle says: 'wa-l-hamdu-lillah' -and praise to Allah. The squares contain the three different writings 'ya Allah', 'ya rahim' and 'ya karim' - 'Oh Allah', 'Oh merciful' and 'Oh noble'.
