The Lonely Planet guide refers to this structure as "disused water tower" and implies it was constructed by the Soviets. I am not entirely convinced it is correct though.
Apparently it was once possible to climb it and enjoy the views of Bukhara from the top. However, when I went there last October the entrance was surrounded with barbed wire.
In this photo the top of the tower is silhouetted against the sky at sunset. It was the only cloudy sunset I witnessed while travelling in Uzbekistan. In WS you can see what the whole tower looks like by daylight.

looking at your WS, I have to compliment you on your talent to turn a boring, old rusty soviet structure into a poetry image, restricting the shot to the upper part of the iron work and calling it a "bird's cage " !!
Bravo, I think you could sell a fridge to the eskimos !!
have a nice we, best regards

Hello kasia ,
For sure , this view is really more attractive than the WS , even this one is interesting , showing us the entire structure .
the artistic approach is superbly realized , here .

It is a beautiful composition. Your shot is balanced and the colors are natural.
Good start to the weekend.

very nice. Strong contrast against a golden background. Very poetic.

Hi Kasia - I belatedly saw Will Perrett's note in the forums about the show your work is being exhibited in - congratulations!
If that's a Soviet water tower, it's not like any Soviet architecture I've ever seen... looks more art nouveau than anything else! And I love the shot, isolating the top of it against the bright orange sky as a silhouette, with the birds crisp and easily visible. Great sunset shot as always. Thanks!

Zdravo draga Kasia. I like your title as it is suggestive of a birdcage due to the tower's structural shape and in addition due to the actual birds perched all over the delicate framework- birds that can fly freely as can the people since the lifting of the Soviet yoke. Thus a birdcage is no longer a cage in the latter sense and never was in your photo of the tower. I think I got a bit convoluted here. As for the effect. The light is magical and so is the delicate filigree. Pays to look up. Srdacni pozdrav.Klaudio.

Pozdrawiam i miłego weekendu

This is an artistic interpretation of this 'birdcage'. The silhouette really stands out against the orange sky. I also like the central positioning of the structure. Great impact - love it!
Kind Regards, Ann

looks wonderful this large bird cage. We have one just up the coast from here called the West Pier, but the winter storms have almost destroyed it this year. A beautifully conceived crop and execution make this so compelling and strangely fascinating. All the more so in this tobacco coloured sunset. Blissful!
Have a great weekend - B.

This is a smart and very elegant composition where you have turned a basically rather ugly tower into something beautiful. The magnificent colours of the evening enhance the fine details of the wide open "cage".

Pozdrawiam i zycze milego weekendu

marina7 (8051) 2014-03-02 12:02
smart title and association with the cage, amazing orange sky for the backdrop. Looks a bit ominous to me though:)
There are tons of Soviet water towers around me and not a single one like that:) It's definitely east-inspired!
Thanks and best wishes!
