Photographer's Note

Photo documentary is a discipline that tells stories about a place by observing and photographing people in their environment. Very often I find that market place is the best spot to find images that portray the spirit of the place. At times there is no way to conceal the fact that you are in a place with a camera facing the subject one another. Sometimes people are very happy to be photographed and even ask you to do so. The local Uzbeks are quite savvy I noticed when it comes to strangers with cameras, some refuse to be photographed, others will happily pose. And here there was no way to pretend that I was not there with a camera.

I was thrilled by the vibrancy of colors on display at this market - Siob Dekh Khan Market in bustling Samarkand- and the highly motivated women vendors of course. Delicacies such as these appetizers are commonly used in Uzbek dishes, such as the wide variety of pickled carrots, radishes, cabbages and green radish, beet roots, etc and other preserved vegetables.

In this situation I used the predictive shooting technique and waited for the right moment to trigger the shutter. Usually I starts with checking out the location and this allows me to familiarise myself with patterns of behaviour and light conditions. It means that I can more or less predict what is likely going to happen and when. Because I know what is likely to occur, I can anticipate the moment and put the camera to my view finder at the very last moment. The reason to use this method is that if the camera is held to my eye as I wait for the right moment, that moment might never have come because people become self aware and alter their behavior. They may wish to pose or even ask not to photographed at all.

In this picture setting was set to widest possible apperture to keep the background soft uncluttered. This was the result I aimed for, a quick bursts of shots. This was all about predicting a definitive moment that I wanted to capture and shooting the frame just as that moment appeared.
