The Kalta Minor - the ‘short or squat minaret’ is an iconic symbol of the ancient city of Khiva.
Khiva or Xiva is one of old cities of ancient Khorezm, in present day Uzbekistan and is a pearl of eastern middle age architecture. According to the archeologists Khiva was founded in the 5th or 4th centuries BC. The origin of the name ‘Khiva’ could be from “Khey-vakh” which roughly means “sweet water.” In the early 16th century it became capital of Khiva khanate, one of the Uzbek khanates. The majority of Khiva’s immense architectural projects began and the city established itself as a center of power in the region. The city was divided into two parts in XIX century - Ichan Kala (inner city) with 10 meters high wall and Dishan Kala (outer city).
Construction of the 'Kalta Minor' began in 1851 by Mohammed Amin Khan who wanted to have an impressive minaret as the finishing touch for his lavish new madrassah (The Muhammad Amin-khan madrassah), part of which can be seen in the left. The construction of the minaret remained unfinished ….it was originally intended to become the largest minaret in Central Asia 80 metres high. But in its incompleteness, it stands today 26 meters high on its 14 meters massive base which suggests that it would have boasted truly mammoth proportions if completed. Despite its unfinished state, the Kalta Minor is still a beautiful spectacle wrapped by bands of dazzling blue, green beige, and turquoise tiles fashioned in a variety of intricate geometric designs and an inscription from a Persian poet encircling its upper dimensions.
PS : Couple of comments about the sky made me write this postscript, though I am at a loss to understand why they were made in the first place! The sky (read clouds) here is the original one & the way it was. It has NOT been added by post processing, though I would definitely like to understand why it was so felt by those who commented.

Salut mon ami!
Your polariser makes wonder for this impressive architecturale image, darkening the sky with conviction to allow the structures to stand out. Contrasts are great, making the colours so vibrant. I like the proportions between the sky and the buildings, nicely balanced and framed.
It's interesting to see the geometric patterns against the organic texture from the clouds. This is a destination we rarely see on these pages; you are a true Indiana Jones!... :-p))

What I really like about your photograph is the implied rounded surfaces; the light is tremendous! The colours are rich and the patterns beautiful. The buildings have a great relationship in your composition and stand out well against that deep blue sky.
Have a great day,

This is truly a magnificent building and one of those structures I would love to see with my own eyes. This perspective gives us a good idea of the patterns and colours of the tiles and you were blessed with a remarkably beautiful sky. I am impressed by the light management.
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-08-19 7:38
Hello Angshu - The glazed tiles of the minaret glint in the sunlight and their rich colours allow us to see the patterns of design very well. I like your upward-looking composition especially the inclusion of the madrassah; it adds context. Well managed and attractive with a sky that almost steals the scene.

interesting that some people thought the sky was artificial! that never even came to mind for me.
infact, i'd LOVE to have these clouds in every sky and photo i take...you totally lucked out!
personally i think the sky/clouds here make up a huge portion of the compo/subject material, its vital.
a perfect day to shoot a photo upwards.
glad you did, lots of colors, bright warm light despite the cooling presence of lots of blues, and it has a wonderful visual effect/impact too.
great looking photo on all accounts.

no trouble with this sky, in fact I believe that it is the most remarkable element in your composition.
Though the architecture of the minaret and the building, and the sheens of its tiles, together with the good POV and elegant perspective, provide a high quality to this shot as well.
No more words, simply a superb work, impeccably executed.
josepmarin (58085) 2014-09-01 4:47
Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
about this splendid polarized sky, I must say that it's a perfect backdrop in order to emphasize the huge architectural beauty of this monument.
I admire the quality of the image and of the colors, and I love the gorgeous visual effect of the colored tiles on the minaret, with its shines under the sunlight.
The perspective is very efficient here.
A great work, as usual.
