Photographer’s Note

Photo shows Mir-i Arab Madrassah which was built in the 1530's, during the reign of Ubaidullah Khan. Mir-i-Arab Madrassah was a working Islamic seminary until it was closed in 1920. It was reopned by Stalin in 1944 in an effort to gain Muslim favor for his war effort. Today, it is still a place of study for some 150 students.

The madrassah can't be visited but its facade can be enjoyed from Kalyan Square. An especially fine view of the Mir-i-Arab is from the top of the adjacent Kalyan Minaret. The two luminous blue domes of the madrassah are beautifully tiled and stand out against the mostly brown architecture around it. The tombs of Sheikh Mir-i-Arab and Ubaidullah Khan are beneath the northern dome.
