I was in Samarkand, waiting for my night train to Nukus and had just taken several shots of the Registan at dusk. I was about to pack the camera gear and head for the station when one of the locals started dancing in front of the Ulugbek Medressa to the music coming from a nearby restaurant.
The light is not "moonlight" of course but I thought it would be a good title.
Gert - no, I have not "left the stans yet". ;-)

I am so pleased to see that you remain in Central Asia and hope you will stay there for some time :-). This is lovely, just superb. The silhouette of a dancing man, waving his arms, only one foot on the ground, happily lost in himself, and to see him in a place like this, and in this kind of light. This is of course a lucky shot in a way, an photo session that you couldn't plan or organize, but it takes a really good photographer to see this opportunity and handle it so well.

la foto manca un po' di qualità, ma in questo caso, non è essenziale, la scena è molto simpatica e originale così come è.
La grande ed elegante architettura si nasconde dietro le ombre, lasciando l'uomo libero di ...danzare.

Super but not the kind of picture that one would expect from UZB!
I like the man dancing as a silhouette and the environment behind him recognizable as a muslim building, likely a mosque
have a nice WE, best regards

Hi Kasia. What can one expect from an Uzbek? Intere4sting comment from Patrick. How and why deny any man to feel pain, joy, despair, elation- whether he be one's neighbour or someone on the other end of the world, and dare I add whether he be Muslim, Christian, Hindu or an atheist. A moment of joy and sweet abandon. And how can one not dance to the crisp, hypnotic music of Uzbekistan? By coincidence you have matched this image with what I listen to at the moment when driving- and that is a CD of classical Uzbek music (makam) sung by top Jewish musicians who now live in Israel but were educated in music in Uzbekistan and were at the top of their profession.By the way, the "soaring" stance reminds me of the film Zorba the greek and of the dances from Kosova. This is a spiritually rich image Kasia i zahvaljujem ti na ovako intimnom i specijalnom momentu. Pozdrav. Klaudio.

What great light and the this figure dancing! The picture has nevertheless a rather strange or even gloomy atmosphere to it which makes it even more interesting. One can only wonder what this person is doing in a setting like this.
I find this a true work of art and worth many more point than I can give.

Well done for catching this unusual and very well taken picture. The person dancing is so well placed in the frame. The light is so beautifully directional and I like the idea of it being moonlight even if it isn't. A cracking shot - very well done.
Kind Regards, Ann

Witaj Kasiu, Twoja azjatycka przygoda ciagle trwa? Jaki traf, ze ten facet zaczął tńczuć przed medresą. Możemy zobaczyć, ze jest ogromna. Fajna sylwetka, troche tajemniczy widok. super zdjęcie.

Good photographers often get the luck as well! This piece of serendipity is beautifully captured. Despite what I imagine was a brief window of opportunity, you've managed to frame this dancing figure excellently, showing plenty of the environment, and using the rule of thirds to good effect. I wonder if for preference you would have been nearer/had a bigger lens on? But for me, the shot is a winner as it is.

an opportunist image that is both charming, compelling and beautiful. Love the originality here and the real sense of enjoyment that this creative shot conveys. Your timing and management of the light here is inspired and the effect both unique and wonderful. Love it!
Enjoy your weekend - B.

Piekne zdjecie i z niesamowita atmosfera. Delikatne swiatlo i cienie na scianie kreuja tutaj fascynujacy nastroj a tanczacy mezczyzna zostal umieszczony w scenerii w idalnym punkcie. Podoba mi sie takze jak swiatlo wydobywa piekne wzory na scianach i czyni calosc jeszcze bardziej ciekawa.
Bardzo udana praca, moje gratulacje!

Złapałeś świetny moment, i dobrze ze tańczył w smudze światła a nie wcieniu, piękne zestawienie: wysokie mury i maleńka postać, fantastyczne kulisy
krzychu30 (14346) 2014-02-22 14:56
fantastyczna i absolutnie wyjatkowa scena!
Pozdrawiam i zycze milej niedzieli

Hello Kasia - thanks for the welcome back! Glad to be around again to see everyone's work; this one especially jumps out as a perfect silhouette of this dancer alone in an incredible space. The existing light you're using is flawless - not moonlight, maybe, but really effective, lighting up the mosaic but leaving the man in the dark. A really well-composed shot, and impressive given that you likely didn't have much time to get it right. Thanks, and I hope you've been well!

Hello Kasia. A really nice, dynamic and speaking photo. Best composition and handling of light. The dance expresses a special feeling. Really a great shot at the ideal moment.

This is a beautiful and joyful capture. I like the play of light and shadows very much. The dancing man looks very small next to the Medressa, and we can see some of the lovely details on the building itself. It's always good to have our cameras handy in case a surprise moments arises. :-)

Hello, a sliver of light emanating from the side creates a poetic and moving moment so beautifully captured by you and your camera. This is what photography means to me. Photo- light, graph- to write. Capturing or writing with light.

It is not unusal that you take the very best photos when you least expect it. It is quite obvious that this was un unexpected photo opportunity you made excellent use of. Your photo of a dancer in the illuminated area in front of Ulugh Beg Madrasa is superb. And the clearly visible mosaic decoration of the builing is a perfect backdrop to the scene. TFS and have a nice evening!

nice the snapshot with the permanent dancer in this specific pose to looks like to came out from the Ulugbek Medressa.I like his/her placement in the frame as is the eye catching of the scene.Well done.
CLODO (27484) 2014-02-28 6:44
Outstanding street photography with the deep shadows and the sculptures on the walls. Of course, the man's position in the picture and its gesture are perfect to give life to the shot.
