Registan square in Samarkand must be the most photographed place in all of the "-stan" countries combined. The buildings from left to right are Ulughbek Medressa(contr. 1420), Tilla Kari Medressa (1660), and Sher Dor Medressa(1636). I did not have to wait long for the square to be empty, it was ramadan and foot traffic was light everywhere, there is an "entry fee" just to enter the square for foreigners, and since I seemed to be the only foreigner in the country at the time, they spotted me quickly. Taken late afternoon, I darkened and partially desaturated the sky.
I will add another Canon 20D experiment to Workshop.

Fascinating looking place. Lovely light on the mosaiques and stunning blues. Great depth too. I don't whether I would have cropped out the foregound as that dark shadow dominites a bit too much for my taste.
Mima (204) 2006-02-11 13:41
Impresive place. The dark clouds make such a dramatic contrast with the buildins's colours.
It's really beautifull. Thank for sharing.

I may be have been photographed thousands of times before, but it is new to me, and I think it looks absolutely amazing! So thanks for sharing.

Nice -stand view. Must be a worthy place to visit, Capitan, or at least your photo makes me want to go there. I´m not sure about the shadow on the right but... What to do? Take care Tan, enjoy your time.

Very nice photo, amazing place to be in...
timotey (119) 2006-02-11 14:06
Beautiful picture with an exposure well managed to render great details of this scene and to keep shadows playing with the high contrasted colours of the square. Very well done !
Gerrit (50724) 2006-02-11 14:19
The place itself has the magic of its name, I see and how you got it all together in the sun under the dark sky makes it even better.
Thanks and regards, Gerrit

belle symétrie des batiments, le cadrage super, et beau contraste comme d'habitude
rbcy1974 (20758) 2006-02-11 14:47
As usual you capture a scene with the best light available and with one of your trademark skies. I think int his case more sky and less ground would look good,

Harika bir fotoğrafla.

toujours ces fabuleux contrastes dans les lumières, qui se marquent tant dans le ciel que partout ailleurs.
Beaux jeux de lumières et couleurs très vives.
alvaraalto (6177) 2006-02-11 17:29
I had to add this marvelous picture to my favourites. The lightfall is so beautiful and the sky in great style of the surrealistic painters. And ofcourse the great green mosaic of the square are fabulous.

The colour with a green tint has a strong resemblance to old Kodachrome.
I like this strong contrast and saturation.
singuanti (15250) 2006-02-11 21:18
Hey Tan. That title gave me a bit of a chuckle. As always you're saturation is top-notch. I like how you worked the depth in plus everything seems so highly detailed. tfs Tan!
PJE (20758) 2006-02-11 22:24
Well Tan you sure know how to adjust the sky to evoke an interesting mood in this photo. Very captivating indeed. I love the viewpoint! Good work!

I didn't know this place, and that San Francisco was on this part of world ;-)
Superb colors and light again, with the most incredible contrast of asia.
rosaline (0) 2006-02-12 6:47
The deep richness of the colour is impressive. I have seen pictures of this square before but not with such long shadows and contrast. The effect works well and the detail in the mosaics and tiles are fantastic. Well done.
lukie (0) 2006-02-12 7:34
first of all I like the altered image. I would have put this one on TE. Not that I don't like the other one, which colors are great.
carper (96) 2006-02-12 7:36

One of the places I wish I had visited...
Beautiful comprehensive view with a light that enhances very well the greens and lets them glow.
Nice WS too, deserves a bit more sharpening I think, shoot two more to the right and deliver us the pano that kills ;-)
Have a nice sunday,
smash2707 (3320) 2006-02-12 10:46
Great sharpness and beautiful composition, as always. I think it has a green hue that I would remove (see my workshop). Regards, Yvonne
Leonie (8809) 2006-02-12 10:57
Another interesting and beautiful shot from your travels..it is maybe a frquently photographed place, but as not many people seem to go there, it remains special and as usual you managed to put an especially beautiful touch to it!
Cormac (26563) 2006-02-12 10:58
It may be a cliche, but it's impressive and beautiful, as is your shot. Again, you got this one just right, with beautiful, saturated colours and that dramatic sky. The slightly off centre composition works well too. Impressive!

Tan, I truelly admire amount of countries you've visited. I've recently decided to go to Iran for holiday and this is quite an invite as there is very similar architecture too. Well done, as always. L.

Hi Tan, Great view of a mythic place. Darkening the sky was definetely a good idea. I guess the copper green cast over all these building is 'natural'. Anyway I like it this way. It is a dream view.
Svillegas (1169) 2006-02-13 2:22
Wonderful light and composition, really dramatic sky. Good sharpeness and lots of colour saturation.
Have a nice day,
ChrisJ (101782) 2006-02-13 3:40
Wonderful sharpness & lighting in this exotic locale. It has a slight cyan color cast on my monitor. Excellent work overall, & tfs
Paolo (41222) 2006-02-13 9:48
Hi Tan, wonderful shot! that gigantic and wonderful square is perfectly captured, with all the most impèortant buildings.
great contrast and colours and a strange mood, with no one around in the square!
john_c (24666) 2006-02-13 13:05
A superb view of this fascinating place. I love the hues and textures of the pavement and buildings. The warm light is very alluring and one is reminded that this is one of the oldest urban sites in the world. So much history, so little time to explore it. A most inspiring shot, Tan. Well done.
banyanman (7789) 2006-02-14 7:56
Hi Tan. You were lucky to be there during Ramadan and find the square so empty but I wonder if it would have been better to have had one or two people in it somewhere to give it scale. I note some of the comments above about this having a green cast. Yvonne's workshop has removed that, but in doing so has introduced a purple cast (especially noticeable in the sky). I liked the PP that you did on the sky but it seems to have left a slight halo effect around some of the buildings. Sorry to be so picky today! I still think it's a good photograph though with lots of interesting detail to look at. Cheers . . . David

That is another stunner, superbly presented! When I visited, it didn't occur to me capture the panoramic view from a slight angle so I am kicking myself when I see this.
kevinos (7403) 2006-02-17 5:07
I don't know how you do itTan. You have a style all your own. You manage to make pictures so luminous and so sharp. This one is truly wonderful.

süper bir fotoğraf olmuş,ışık ve gölgeler çok uyumlu;linear pola etkisi de hissediliyor, ellerine sağlık.

Hello Tan, this is a wonderful capture of the most famous examples of Central Asian architecture. You have brought out the colours and contrasts strongly as always. I sometimes wonder if you overdo it a bit but you just manage to keep the right side of the line. It's good to see the square to be clear in this picture - when I was there in 2001 it was the 10th anniversary of independence and the square was filled with a massive stage to host the national celebrations.

I like your images, notes and how you work very well with photoshop. I've a lot to learn... and from your gallery it's really a pleasure!
I was there last year and I've enjoyed the nice people and the magnificent of the place!
I can't wait too to see your images taken with your new wideangle lens!

This is a great example of your photo-style: interesting object, inimitable, well saturated and at the same time natural colours, magnificent, cloudy sky and the atmosphere of the phothographed place.
ruisc_pt (10890) 2006-12-30 4:39
The colours and the scene give it a sensation of grandiosity.
I Like it.

Hi Tan. If only all cliches were this stunning and imposing.Wonderful effect created by desaturation of the sky for the structures glow even more in the sunlight. Excellent PoV as one can enjoy the richness of the mosaic foreground and and the medressas. Great job. Regards. Klaudio.

Maginficent architecture, well captured, good level of details and lighting. TFS

A fantastic bit of photography. The absence of any people gives it the air of a magnificent forgotton city, even it it really isn't. Very detailed, the sky is gorgeous, great use of light. I think the ground should be left as it is; I like the little fountain. Overall, a wonderous pic.
nata (488) 2007-05-18 6:42
nice picture. The colors seem much brighter than in reality. very beautiful
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2007-11-20 11:26
A fascinating shot, and one of the few I've seen that shows the whole plaza and its surroundings. But without people, it looks almost like a toy set.
azizbilgili (2111) 2008-10-11 16:20
Lovely light on the mosaiques and stunning blues. Great depth too, Very nice photo, amazing place...
vmukherjee (612) 2008-11-23 3:36
Great shot! The two gates on the sides, the line on the floor, and the clouds, all form leading lines which take the eyes to the gate at the centre of the image. Beautiful colours and I like the light and the soft shadows very much. Thanks for sharing.
coco (30439) 2009-06-06 3:22
As usual a great work with the light and with the contrast and colours.
It's also an impressive place and the picture makes it even better.
